The Luttinger model is a paradigm for the breakdown due to interactions of the Fermi liquid description of one-dimensional massless Dirac fermions. Attempts to discretize the model on a one-dimensional lattice have failed to reproduce the established bosonization results because of the fermion-doubling obstruction: a local and symmetry-preserving discretization of the Hamiltonian introduces a spurious second species of low-energy excitations, while a nonlocal discretization opens a single-particle gap at the Dirac point. Here, we show how to work around this obstruction by discretizing both space and time to obtain a local Lagrangian for a helical Luttinger liquid with Hubbard interaction.

Silicone-in-water emulsions have found widespread use as lubricants, water repellants, softeners, binders, antiblocking agents, antislip agents, and defoamers across a diverse range of markets including textiles, coatings, pharmaceuticals, and home and personal care. Stable incorporation of silicone emulsions into formulated products for these applications can be a challenge. Aqueous polymer colloids known as latexes are widely used in coating applications. Multicomponent latexes comprised of two incompatible polymeric species organized into a core-shell particle morphology are a promising system for self-stratifying coatings that spontaneously partition into multiple layers, thereby yielding complex structured coatings requiring only a single application step. Developing new materials for self-stratifying coatings requires a clear understanding of the thermodynamic and kinetic properties governing phase separation and polymeric species transport.

Massless Dirac fermions in an electric field propagate along the field lines without backscattering, due to the combination of spin-momentum locking and spin conservation. This phenomenon, known as 'Klein tunneling', may be lost if the Dirac equation is discretized in space and time, because of scattering between multiple Dirac cones in the Brillouin zone. A spatially oscillating pair potential Δ(r)=Δ_{0}e^{2iK·r} with momentum K>Δ_{0}/ℏv drives a deconfinement transition of the Majorana bound states in the vortex cores of a Fu-Kane heterostructure (a 3D topological insulator with Fermi velocity v, on a superconducting substrate with gap Δ_{0}, in a perpendicular magnetic field). In the deconfined phase at zero chemical potential the Majorana fermions form a dispersionless Landau level, protected by chiral symmetry against broadening due to vortex scattering. The coherent superposition of electrons and holes in the Majorana Landau level is detectable as a local density of states oscillation with wave vector sqrt[K^{2}-(Δ_{0}/ℏv)^{2}].

The article discusses the key aspects of the guidance of the European Psychiatric Association (EPA) on forensic psychiatry and the required actions to implement guidance into clinical practice. The authors pay attention to the discrepancies between the recommendations resulting from the guidance and clinical practice and current systemic solutions. The basic difficulties were discussed in relation to the implementation of the guidelines in the clinical practice in Poland as regards providing services as an expert by psychiatrists and psychologists, risk assessment and management, psychiatric therapy in detention centers, implementation of protection measures in inpatient and outpatient treatment conditions, efficiency of pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions.

The question whether the mixed phase of a gapless superconductor can support a Landau level is a celebrated problem in the context of d-wave superconductivity, with a negative answer: the scattering of the subgap excitations (massless Dirac fermions) by the vortex lattice obscures the Landau level quantization. Here we show that the same question has a positive answer for a Weyl superconductor: the chirality of the Weyl fermions protects the zeroth Landau level by means of a topological index theorem. As a result, the heat conductance parallel to the magnetic field has the universal value G=1/2g_{0}Φ/Φ_{0}, with Φ as the magnetic flux through the system, Φ_{0} as the superconducting flux quantum, and g_{0} as the thermal conductance quantum.

A complete cold chain freeze-fracture methodology has been developed to test the feasibility of using time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) imaging for the molecular analysis of frozen hydrated biological samples. Because the technique only samples the first few monolayers of a sample, water on the surface of a sample can be a major source of interference. This problem can be minimized by placing a cold trap (fracture knife and housing at -196 degrees C) near the fractured sample that is held at a warmer temperature (-97 to -113 degrees C).

During vasopressin (VP)-induced water movement, toad urinary bladder epithelial cells undergo unique morphological changes. The osmolality within these responding cells remains relatively stable despite the large transcellular transport of water. We hypothesized that the hydroosmotic response to VP may be associated with a net increase in sodium either as an aid in maintaining the intracellular osmolality or as part of a Na-Ca exchange process.

The mineralocorticoid (MC) activities of 19-hydroxyaldosterone (19-OH-Aldo) and 19-nor-aldosterone (19-nor-Aldo) were tested in adrenalectomized male rats. Potency was assessed by three criteria. Overall MC activity is expressed as the ability to decrease the urinary Na+ to K+ ratio; antinatriuretic activity is represented by decreases in the urinary Na+ to creatinine ratio, and kaliuretic activity by increases in the K+ to creatinine ratio.

[3H]Aldosterone is transformed into several metabolites by subcellular fractions of rat kidney. 80-90% of the metabolites synthesized by nuclei and plasma membranes are 5 alpha-DHAldo and 3 alpha,5 alpha-THAldo in ratios of 1:2 and 1:1 respectively; small quantities of 3 beta,5 alpha-THAldo are also synthesized. Homozygous animals demonstrate significant reductions in renal medullary urea and sodium ion concentrations.
