Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma are the two most prevalent chronic respiratory diseases, significantly impacting public health. Utilizing clinical questionnaires to identify and differentiate patients with COPD and asthma for further diagnostic procedures has emerged as an effective strategy to address this issue. We developed a new diagnostic tool, the COPD-Asthma Differentiation Questionnaire (CAD-Q), to differentiate between COPD and asthma in adults.

Impact of e-cigarettes as cancer risk: A protocol for systematic review and meta-analysis.

Background: The use of electronic cigarettes is one of the current public health problems on increasing alert, has been growing at an accelerating rate, and has become a public health emergency. Its importance is explained by the continuous growth and acceleration of oncological rates among all ages versus the absence of high-quality evidence, correlated to the use of nicotine derived products, being at their regular versions or the new ones. Available preclinical data indicate that activation of the sympathetic nervous system by nicotine inhaled from e-cigarettes may stimulate cancer development and growth by several mechanisms, which results can significantly reduce life's quality.

Background: The incorporation of integrative medicine as a holistic approach increased in medical education. However, complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) formal teaching in psychiatry residency programs is limited.

Background: In the search for healthier and more functional foods, dietary triglycerides (TAGs) have played a prominent role in the food industry. The objective of this work was to evaluate new clay supports to immobilize lipase from Rhizopus oryzae and use it in the synthesis of TAGs.

Folic acid-doxorubicin polymeric nanocapsules: A promising formulation for the treatment of triple-negative breast cancer.

Breast cancer is the most common cancers among women and is one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality in this population. In this study, we aimed to conjugate doxorubicin (DOX), a drug widely used in cancer chemotherapy, and folic acid (FA), a ligand targeted for cancer therapy, to lipid-core nanocapsules (LNC), and evaluate the efficacy of the nanoformulation against triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) MDA-MB-231 cells that overexpress folate receptors (FRs). We performed cell viability assays, quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR), cell migration assay, and clonogenic assay, as well as measured the levels of nitric oxide (NO) generated and cellular uptake.

Purpose: Folic acid-doxorubicin-double-functionalized-lipid-core nanocapsules (LNC-CS--Zn-DOX-FA) were prepared, characterized, and evaluated in vitro against ovarian and bladder cancer cell lines (OVCAR-3 and T24).

Methods: LNC-CS--Zn-DOX-FA was prepared by self-assembly and interfacial reactions, and characterized using liquid chromatography, particle sizing, transmission electron microscopy, and infrared spectroscopy. Cell viability and cellular uptake were studied using MTT assay and confocal microscopy.

Interaction between cognitive status, fear of falling, and balance in elderly persons.

Objective: Evaluate the cognitive function and its relationship with balance, history of falls, and fear of falling in the elderly.

Methods: We evaluated 250 elderly persons aged at least 60 years, who answered a sociodemographic questionnaire about the occurrence of falls in the last year. The cognitive function, balance, and fear of falling were assessed using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Berg Balance Scale (BBS), and Falls Efficacy Scale (FES-I) scores, respectively.

First-line transition metals, such as zinc (II), copper (II) and nickel (II), can be incorporated into the porphyrin nucleus, making this molecule more selective and more effective for this therapy in combating to tumor cells, such as metastatic melanoma. We characterized these derivatives to verify the improvement in selectivity of platinum (II) 4-PtTPyP porphyrins.

Prioritizing Competencies for "Research" and Community Health Workers.

The community health worker (CHW) model is utilized globally to promote health and reduce health disparities in hard-to-reach and underserved communities. The model is deemed successful due to involvement of these natural helpers who are familiar with the local customs, language, and traditions. "Research" CHWs (also known as ) serve as cultural mediators between their community and academic researchers and are increasingly involved in the design and implementation of research; yet few of these individuals have received formal training in research methods or ethics.

Self-Efficacy to Engage in Physical Exercise and Walking Ability Best Predicted Exercise Adherence after Stroke.

Aim: To describe exercise preferences and to investigate the contribution of exercise preferences, walking ability, and current levels of physical activity in predicting exercise adherence in individuals with chronic stroke.

Methods: For this exploratory study, exercise adherence was measured using the first question of the first section of the Exercise Preference Questionnaire (stroke)-Brazil (EPQ (stroke)-Brazil). Nine independent variables were included as potential predictors of exercise adherence: the seven factors of the EPQ (stroke)-Brazil, walking speed, and level of physical activity.

[Viral myositis, a pediatric case report].

Acute viral myositis is a complication after a viral infection mainly caused by Influenza A and B viruses. It is characterized as a transitory, sudden, self-limiting and benign inflammatory process. It usually affects preschool and school children presenting bilateral pain and sensitivity in the muscle groups of the lower limbs without alteration in the neurological examination.

Active smoking, secondhand smoke exposure and serum cotinine levels among Cheyenne River Sioux communities in context of a Tribal Public Health Policy.

Introduction: American Indians and Alaska Natives face disproportionately high rates of smoking and secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure. The Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe (CRST) is among the few Tribal Nations controlling commercial tobacco exposures in public and work places. We had an opportunity to explore effects of the new commercial tobacco-free policy (implemented in 2015) in an environmental health study (2014-2016) that collected information about commercial tobacco use and SHS prevalence and examined predictor variables of serum cotinine concentrations.

[Maternal and child health care in Cuba: achievements and challengesCuidados de saúde materno-infantil em Cuba: conquistas e desafios].

In Cuba, maternal and child health care is based on the priority granted by the State, the implementation of the National Maternal and Child Health Program and the guarantee of equitable access to health services. This article describes the Cuban experience in this field, as well as its main achievements, challenges, and lessons learned. Among the most relevant results up to 2015 are the reduction of infant mortality rate and under-five mortality rate to 4.
