Simultaneously occurring brown tumours in the mandible and maxilla in a patient with vitamin D deficiency.

We report a rare case of a 27-year-old Asian female presenting with simultaneous brown tumours in the maxilla and mandible secondary to vitamin D deficiency which was a result of dietary deficiency and lack of exposure to sunlight.

An unusual presentation of an ectopic third molar in the condylar region.

We describe the case of a 53-year-old patient who presented with an intermittent discharging sinus on his face which, following a number of investigations, was found to be secondary to an ectopic third molar in the condylar region. The ectopic tooth was surgically removed with complete resolution of the facial swelling. This case highlights the possibility of dental pathology presenting with completely unrelated signs and symptoms, and the importance of the clinician maintaining an open mind when it comes to the differential diagnosis of such a presentation.

The association between oral microorgansims and aspiration pneumonia in the institutionalized elderly: review and recommendations.

Aspiration pneumonia is a leading cause of illness and death in persons who reside in long-term-care facilities and, combined with the lack of proper oral health care and services, the risk of aspiration pneumonia rises. The purpose of this article is to review recent literature on oral hygiene and oral care in long-term-care facilities and report new findings regarding associated risks for aspiration pneumonia, as well as research on oral care and health outcomes. The PubMed MeSH database was utilized to direct a specific search by entering terms "aspiration pneumonia" and "oral hygiene" from 1970 to 2009, which yielded 34 articles.

'Adoption and attachment theory' the attachment models of adoptive mothers and the revision of attachment patterns of their late-adopted children.

Objective: This study examined the attachment patterns of late-adopted children (aged 4-7) and their adoptive mothers during the first 7- to 8-month period after adoption and aimed to evaluate the effect of adoptive mothers' attachment security on the revision of the attachment patterns of their late-adopted children.

Design: We assessed attachment patterns in 20 adoptive dyads and 12 genetically related dyads at two different times: T1 (time 1) within 2 months of adoption and T2 (time 2) 6 months after T1.

Methods: The children's behavioural attachment patterns were assessed using the Separation-Reunion Procedure and the children's representational (verbal) attachment patterns using the Manchester Child Attachment Story Task.

Use of microswitch technology and a keyboard emulator to support literacy performance of persons with extensive neuro-motor disabilities.

Objective: To assess the effectiveness and acceptability of microswitch technology and a keyboard emulator to enable three participants with extensive neuro-motor disabilities to write words.

Method: In Study I, two participants triggered an automatic scanning keyboard and selected/wrote letters via a small sliding movement of their hand(s) activating a touch/pressure panel (microswitch). In Study II, a third participant used the sliding movement and panel and a vocalization response with a voice-detecting microswitch.

Impact of Toll-like receptor 2 expression in renal allograft rejection.

Background: An important role of TLR2 has been shown in various experimental models of renal ischaemia/reperfusion injury. To study the expression of TLR2 in renal allograft rejection systematically, we established an experimental rat transplantation model.

Methods: TLR2 expression was analysed in 99 human renal allograft biopsies, and in rat allografts at Day 6 and 28 after experimental renal transplantation.

An estimate of the rate of growth of a juvenile aggressive ossifying fibroma in a 15 year old child.

Juvenile ossifying fibroma (JOF) is an uncommon fibro-osseous lesion occurring in the facial bones. It has been recognised as a separate histopathological entity among the fibro-osseous group of lesions. Fibro-osseous lesions of the craniofacial bones are difficult to classify and treat however a common factor to all is the conversion of the bone to benign fibrous tissue with a varying degree of mineralised tissue.

Alcohol use and sex risk behaviors among HIV-infected female sex workers (FSWs) and HIV-infected male clients of FSWs in India.

Unprotected heterosexual transactional sex plays a central role in the spread of HIV in India. Given alcohol's association with risky sex in other populations and alcohol's role in HIV disease progression, we investigated patterns of alcohol use in HIV-infected female sex workers (FSWs) and HIV-infected male clients of FSWs in Mumbai. Analyses identified factors associated with heavy alcohol use and evaluated the relationship between alcohol use and risky sex.

Unusual kinematics and jaw morphology associated with piscivory in the poeciliid, Belonesox belizanus.

Piscivory in fishes is often associated with the evolution of highly elongate jaws that achieve a large mouth opening, or gape. Belonesox belizanus, the pike killifish, has independently evolved this morphology, which is derived from short-jawed poeciliids within the Cyprinodontiformes. Using kinematic analysis of high-speed video footage, we observed a novel aspect of the elongate jaws of Belonesox; the premaxilla rotates dorsally during mouth opening, while the lower jaw rotates ventrally.

Increasing protein stability: importance of DeltaC(p) and the denatured state.

Increasing the conformational stability of proteins is an important goal for both basic research and industrial applications. In vitro selection has been used successfully to increase protein stability, but more often site-directed mutagenesis is used to optimize the various forces that contribute to protein stability. In previous studies, we showed that improving electrostatic interactions on the protein surface and improving the beta-turn sequences were good general strategies for increasing protein stability, and used them to increase the stability of RNase Sa.

A rare case of frontal linear scleroderma (en coup de sabre) with intra-oral and dental involvement.

En coup de sabre is a linear scleroderma that presents on the frontal or frontoparietal scalp. This case describes a 36-year-old female who presented with a history of en coup de sabre with subsequent oral and dental involvement which to the authors' knowledge has never been reported previously. The clinical presentation, pathology and laboratory findings together with a brief discussion of the management of this case are discussed.

Proprioception of the wrist following posterior interosseous sensory neurectomy.

Purpose: The posterior interosseous sensory nerve innervates the dorsal capsule of the wrist, which may provide nociceptive and proprioceptive sensation. Posterior interosseous sensory neurectomy (PISN) is commonly used as a primary or adjunctive procedure to provide wrist analgesia for a variety of wrist conditions. Currently, there is little information in the literature regarding the proprioceptive role of the posterior interosseous sensory nerve and the resultant effects of PISN on wrist proprioception.

Factors that influence helical preferences for singly charged gas-phase peptide ions: the effects of multiple potential charge-carrying sites.

Ion mobility-mass spectrometry is used to investigate the structure(s) of a series of model peptide [M + H](+) ions to better understand how intrinsic properties affect structure in low dielectric environments. The influence of peptide length, amino acid sequence, and composition on gas-phase structure is examined for a series of model peptides that have been previously studied in solution. Collision cross sections for the [M + H](+) ions of Ac-(AAKAA)(n)Y-NH(2) (n = 3-6) and Ac-Y(AEAAKA)(n)F-NH(2) (n = 2-5) are reported and correlated with candidate structures generated using molecular modeling techniques.

Increasing protein stability by improving beta-turns.

Our goal was to gain a better understanding of how protein stability can be increased by improving beta-turns. We studied 22 beta-turns in nine proteins with 66-370 residues by replacing other residues with proline and glycine and measuring the stability. These two residues are statistically preferred in some beta-turn positions.

Mudskipper pectoral fin kinematics in aquatic and terrestrial environments.

Mudskippers use pectoral fins for their primary mode of locomotion on land and pectoral fins in conjunction with the axial musculature and caudal fin to move in water. We hypothesized that distinct pectoral fin movements enable effective locomotion in each environment. Additionally, we made three functional predictions about fin movements during locomotion on land versus water: the pectoral fin is depressed more on land than in water; the pectoral fin will have greater changes in fin area between propulsive and recovery phases in water versus land; anterior and posterior excursions will be greater on land than in water.

Scrapie-infected transgenic mice expressing a laminin receptor decoy mutant reveal a prolonged incubation time associated with low levels of PrPres.

The 37-kDa/67-kDa laminin receptor (LRP/LR) was identified as a cell surface receptor for prion proteins. The laminin receptor mutant LRP102-295::FLAG interfered with PrP(Sc) propagation in murine neuronal cells presumably acting as a decoy in a transdominant negative fashion by trapping PrP molecules in the extracellular matrix. Here, we generated hemizygous transgenic mice expressing LRP102-295::FLAG in the brain.

Upregulation of TNF receptor type 2 in human and experimental renal allograft rejection.

An important role of TNF interacting with TNFR2 has been shown in different models of ischemic, nephrotoxic and immune-mediated renal injury. To systematically evaluate the expression of TNFR2 in renal allograft rejection, we investigated human renal allograft biopsies and, in addition, established an experimental transplantation model in rats to verify the human data under standardized conditions. The expression of TNFR2 was analyzed in 96 human renal allograft biopsies with different disease entities.
