Interferons (IFN) are crucial antiviral and immunomodulatory cytokines that exert their function through the regulation of a myriad of genes, many of which are not yet characterized. Here, we reveal that lipin-2, a phosphatidic acid phosphatase whose mutations produce an autoinflammatory syndrome known as Majeed syndrome in humans, is regulated by IFN in a STAT-1-dependent manner. Lipin-2 inhibits viral replication both in vitro and in vivo.

Lipins are phosphatidic acid phosphatase enzymes whose cellular function in regulating lipid metabolism has been known for decades, particularly in metabolically active tissues such as adipose tissue or liver. In recent years evidence is accumulating for key regulatory roles of the lipin family in innate immune cells. Lipins may help regulate signaling through relevant immune receptors such as Toll-like receptors, and are also integral part of the cellular machinery for lipid storage in these cells, thereby modulating certain inflammatory processes.

Mutations in human LPIN2 produce a disease known as Majeed syndrome, the clinical manifestations of which are ameliorated by strategies that block IL-1β or its receptor. However the role of lipin-2 during IL-1β production remains elusive. A case of a 50 years-old breast cancer patient treated with weekly paclitaxel and BIBF 1120 is reported herein. At the end of the twelfth cycle of chemotherapy, the patient developed distal onycholysis with intense hyponychium serous exudates, pain and malodor in all her fingernails. It was treated with topical fusidic acid and 1% methylprednisolone aceponate two times daily, with an excellent clinical response from the first three days of treatment.

Recent research studies have been confirming the evidence that patients with personality borderline disorder (BPD) suffer significant neuropsychological disorders. Neurocognitive dysfunction of BPD seems to mainly affect the functions characteristic of the prefrontal areas that participate in information processing and management and in the regulation of complex behavioral responses. Neuropsychological disorders not only are seen in the specific tests but are also reflected and could play an important role in the clinical manifestations of borderline disorder, such as emotional dysregulation and impulsive behaviors.

The system of Diseases of Compulsory Declaration (DCDs) encompasses, until the end of 1997, the notification of 41 transmittable infectious diseases, to which are added epidemic outbreaks of any etiology and cause. In Navarra, the DCDs are declared to the Vigilance and Epidemiological Control Section of the Public Health Institute on a weekly basis by the doctors of Primary and Specialised Care. Subsequently, the information is sent to the National Centre of Epidemiology where the data from the autonomous communities is centralised.

In 2000, under the heading of diseases of respiratory transmission, 31,106 cases of flu were reported; 80% of total annual cases were reported in the first 6 weeks of the year, with a maximum in week 1 when 7,949 cases were reported. It is generally agreed that the kidneys are the only site of 1-hydroxylation of vitamin D and that the abnormal calcium metabolism in sarcoidosis is caused by increased production of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25-[OH]2D). We describe a patient with sarcoidosis with hypercalcemic nephropathy and end-stage renal disease undergoing long-term maintenance hemodialysis who was initially seen with hypercalcemia and elevated serum levels of 1,25-(OH)2D. Prednisone administration resulted in decreased serum calcium and 1,25-(OH)2D levels.

The effects of water diuresis, hypotonic NaCl, and hypotonic mannitol diuresis on renal sodium and water excretion were examined in normal dogs and in dogs with chronic constriction of the thoracic inferior vena cava and ascites (caval dogs). During all three diuretic states, the capacity to excrete solute-free water relative to the supply of sodium to the water clearing segment of the nephron was significantly greater in the caval dog. This finding was most evident during hypotonic NaCl diuresis but was also striking during hypotonic mannitol diuresis despite the more unfavorable gradient for sodium reabsorption at the distal tubule produced by this agent in caval dogs.
