Insecticide-resistant clones of the peach-potato aphid, Myzus persicae (Sulzer), have previously been shown to have a reduced response to aphid alarm pheromone compared to susceptible ones. The resulting vulnerability of susceptible and resistant aphids to attack by the primary endoparasitoid, Diaeretiella rapae (McIntosh), was investigated across three spatial scales. These scales ranged from aphids confined on individual leaves exposed to single female parasitoids, to aphids on groups of whole plants exposed to several parasitoids.

We tested the effects of the metalloporphyrin catalytic antioxidant AEOL10150, a compound that scavenges peroxynitrite, inhibits lipid peroxidation, and has SOD and catalase-like activities, on Cl(2)-induced airway injury. Balb/C mice received 100ppm Cl(2) gas for 5 min.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Exposure to chlorine (Cl2) causes airway injury, characterized by oxidative damage, an influx of inflammatory cells and airway hyperresponsiveness. We hypothesized that Cl2-induced airway injury may be attenuated by antioxidant treatment, even after the initial injury.
Methods: Balb/C mice were exposed to Cl2 gas (100 ppm) for 5 mins, an exposure that was established to alter airway function with minimal histological disruption of the epithelium.

Music or sound effects are often used to enhance Virtual Environments, but it is not known how this audio may influence gait speed. This study investigated the influence of audio cue tempo on treadmill walking with and without visual flow. The walking speeds of 11 individuals were recorded during exposure to a range of audio cue rates.

In cystic fibrosis (CF), poorly resolved neutrophillic inflammation of the lungs is a primary cause of morbidity and mortality. Expression of IL-6 has been reported to be low in CF lung secretions, despite ongoing inflammation, but the status of soluble IL-6 receptor (sIL-6R) in these patients is unknown.

There is no consensus as to the best method for assessing HER2 status. Disadvantages of fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) testing include longer time required for staining and scoring slides, requirements for specialized training and fluorescence microscopy, and loss of the signal due to quenching of the fluorescent dye.

The University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center developed Health Extension Rural Offices (HEROs) as a vehicle for its model of health extension. Health extension agents are located in rural communities across the state and are supported by regional coordinators and the Office of the Vice President for Community Health at the Health Sciences Center.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA high-throughput two-step PCR strategy for the identification of selected genes from a BAC library derived from hexaploid wheat (16,974 Mbp) is described. The screen is based on the pooling of DNA from BAC clones into 675 "superpools" arrayed in a three-dimensional configuration. Each BAC clone is represented in three superpools to allow the identification of candidate 384-well plates of clones after the first round of PCR; identification is facilitated by an associated Perl script.

Because of issues related to volatility and yield with some of the primary deuterated synthons an improved synthesis is presented. These two deuterated analogs were used to discover and quantify the presence of the corresponding endogenous isoprostanes in human urine.

Frogs are very insensitive to TCDD toxicity, and AHRs from Xenopus laevis (African clawed frog) bind TCDD with >20-fold lower affinity than mouse AHR(b-1). Frog AHRs may nonetheless be highly responsive to structurally distinct compounds, especially putative endogenous ligands.

The loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay has been used for the detection of two genetically modified (GM) related sequences. The amplification of target DNA sequences from leaf and maize seed tissues prepared with minimum preparative treatment (disruption in water) demonstrates the ability of LAMP to work in conditions normally inhibitive to PCRs.

This chestnut blight is caused by Cryphonectria parasitica, a fungus that infects stem tissues and kills the trees by girdling them. Because of the great economic and ecological value of this species, significant efforts have been made over the century to combat this disease, but it wasn't until recently that a focused genomics approach was initiated.

We found that there is a dramatic shift in the formation of 5-lipoxygenase products during this process. Freshly isolated neutrophils rapidly convert leukotriene B(4) (LTB(4)) and 5-hydroxy-6,8,11,14-eicosatetraenoic acid (5-HETE) to their biologically inactive omega-oxidation products.

We measured ASE ratios in 30 genes putatively involved in stress responses in five hybrids and their reciprocals, namely Hordeum spontaneum 41-1/Alexis (HAl), Hordeum spontaneum 41-1/Arta (HAr), Sloop/WI3408 (SW), Tadmor/Sloop (TS) and Tadmor/WI3408 (TW). In order to detect cis-acting variation related to drought and developmental changes, the barley hybrids were grown under control and water-limited conditions, and leaf tissue was harvested at two developmental stages.

Here we have applied the loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) method to amplify GMO-related DNA sequences, 'internal' commonly-used motifs for controlling transgene expression and event-specific (plant-transgene) junctions.
Results: We have tested the specificity and sensitivity of the technique for use in GMO studies.
Responses to allopolyploidy include unequal expression of duplicated genes, gene silencing, and sometimes genomic rearrangements. In plants, the relationship between allelic expression differences arising from changes in regulatory regions and the resulting phenotype is poorly understood because of the complexity of their genomes and lack of efficient methodology to identify regulatory variation. Identifying functionally important regulatory variation in crops such as hexaploid wheat (Triticum aestivum) is in its infancy.

Archaeobotanical studies are showing that acquisition of the full set of traits observed in domesticated cereals was a protracted process, intermediate stages being seen at early farming sites throughout the Fertile Crescent. New genetic data are confirming the multiregional nature of cereal domestication, correcting a previous view that each crop was domesticated by a rapid, unique and geographically localised process.
