Of the few weberite-type Na-ion cathodes explored to date, NaFeF exhibits the best performance, with capacities up to 184 mAh/g and energy densities up to 550 Wh/kg reported for this material. However, the development of robust structure-property relationships for this material is complicated by its tendency to form as a mixture of metastable polymorphs, and transform to a lower-energy Na FeF perovskite compound during electrochemical cycling. Our first-principles-guided exploration of Fe-based weberite solid solutions with redox-inactive Mg and Al predicts an enhanced thermodynamic stability of NaMg Fe F as the Mg content is increased, and the = 0.

Background: Treatment of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) largely involves surgical excision. Few studies have examined oncologic outcomes of tumors managed by watchful waiting (WW) when the lesion appears resolved after the biopsy site has healed.

Objective: To describe oncologic outcomes for patients diagnosed with cSCC that was determined clinically resolved at follow-up and subsequently managed by WW.

The long non-coding RNA (lncRNA), HAR1A is emerging as a putative tumour suppressor. In non-neoplastic brain cells, REST suppresses HAR1A expression. In gliomas REST acts as an oncogene and is a potential therapeutic target.

Background: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a leading preventable cause of death in hospitalized patients. Current intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) devices used to provide external mechanical compression for VTE prevention are associated with a multitude of clinical challenges that often result in subtherapeutic use. A comparative study was conducted of the real-world clinical use of a novel mechanical compression device (MCD) and a current IPC device.

The main experiment concerned time-domain measurements of the acoustical reflection function (RF) of the human ear in adults and children (aged 5 to 8 years) using a probe inserted into the ear canal. This RF was used to calculate the area function of the ear canal versus distance along its centerline. Acoustical reflectance was calculated in the frequency domain from the RF, as was the difference in sound pressure level near the tympanic membrane relative to the probe tip.

Article Synopsis
  • Malalignment of the great toenails is a frequently overlooked nail disorder that is not often recognized in general medical practice.
  • The study reviewed 34 articles involving 117 patients, all exhibiting lateral deviation of the toenails along with yellow-brown discoloration and thickening.
  • The findings highlight the need for increased awareness among healthcare providers to improve diagnosis and management of this underdiagnosed condition.

Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNAseq) is a rapidly advancing field enabling the characterisation of heterogeneous gene expression profiles within a population. The cell cycle phase is a major contributor to gene expression variance between cells and computational analysis tools have been developed to assign cell cycle phases to cells within scRNAseq datasets. Whilst these tools can be extremely useful, all have the drawback that they classify cells as only G1, S or G2/M.

Background: Treatment option decisions for low-risk squamous cell carcinoma in situ (SCCIS) are hampered by a paucity of management-type-specific outcomes data.

Objective: Describe SCCIS tumor outcomes managed by watchful waiting and risk factors associated with poor cancer outcomes.

Materials And Methods: Retrospective cohort study.

High-throughput sequencing has created an exponential increase in the amount of gene expression data, much of which is freely, publicly available in repositories such as NCBI's Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO). Querying this data for patterns such as similarity and distance, however, becomes increasingly challenging as the total amount of data increases. Furthermore, vectorization of the data is commonly required in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) approaches.

DNA methylation data has been used to make "epigenetic clocks" which attempt to measure chronological and biological aging. These models rely on data derived from bisulfite-based measurements, which exploit a semi-selective deamination and a genomic reference to determine methylation states. Here, we demonstrate how another hallmark of aging, genomic instability, influences methylation measurements in both bisulfite sequencing and methylation arrays.

Objectives: Audiometric testing typically does not include frequencies above 8 kHz. However, recent research suggests that extended high-frequency (EHF) sensitivity could affect hearing in natural communication environments. Clinical assessment of hearing often employs pure tones and frequency-modulated (FM) tones interchangeably regardless of frequency.

Introduction: Entering an animal shelter is a stressful experience for dogs that can impair their welfare, adoptability, and shelter staff safety; thus, it is crucial to reduce the stress experienced during intake. This study investigated the current intake practices for dogs admitted in animal shelters in Texas, United States.

Methods: To gather data, an online survey was designed and distributed to shelter employees responsible for intake at animal shelters.

The bioactive sphingolipid sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) acts as a ligand for a family of G protein-coupled S1P receptors (S1PR1-5) to participate in a variety of signaling pathways. However, their specific roles in the neural retina remain unclear. We previously showed that S1P receptor subtype 2 (S1PR2) is expressed in murine retinas, primarily in photoreceptors and bipolar cells, and its expression is altered by retinal stress.

Objectives: A National Recruitment Scheme (NRS) for Pharmacy trainees was introduced in England and Wales in 2017, standardising recruitment processes on behalf of employers and with the aim of reducing bias for candidates applying to training posts within the National Health Service (NHS). This research attempted to identify whether the introduction of the NRS had an impact on the recruitment of Black, Asian, or other Minority Ethnic applicants into the most sought-after posts within the Scheme (hospital posts).

Methods: An observational study was undertaken.

Mevalonate kinase deficiency is a group of rare metabolic autoinflammatory disorders that present with recurrent fevers, abdominal pain, arthralgias, adenopathy, and a variety of cutaneous manifestations. The skin findings may mimic cellulitis, erythema elevatum diutinum, IgA vasculitis, and Sweet syndrome, and there is often a morbilliform or urticarial rash and aphthous stomatitis. Mevalonate kinase deficiency is one of the identified monogenic variants that can cause very early onset inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

Background: Microglia, the brain's principal immune cells, have been implicated in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD), a condition shown to affect more females than males. Although sex differences in microglial function and transcriptomic programming have been described across development and in disease models of AD, no studies have comprehensively identified the sex divergences that emerge in the aging mouse hippocampus. Further, existing models of AD generally develop pathology (amyloid plaques and tau tangles) early in life and fail to recapitulate the aged brain environment associated with late-onset AD.

Major histocompatibility complex I (MHC-I) CNS cellular localization and function is still being determined after previously being thought to be absent from the brain. MHC-I expression has been reported to increase with brain aging in mouse, rat, and human whole tissue analyses, but the cellular localization was undetermined. Neuronal MHC-I is proposed to regulate developmental synapse elimination and tau pathology in Alzheimer's disease (AD).

Purpose: Common clinical application of auditory brainstem response (ABR) testing is limited to 0.25-4 kHz. Prior research has demonstrated associations between ABR and behavioral thresholds for tone burst stimuli > 4 kHz in adults, but there are no comparable data for children.
