The development of the gonads in male and female chick embryos with induced unilateral mesonephric agenesis was studied using grafting, histoenzymology, and electron microscopy. As in embryos with a mesonephros, proliferation of the coelomic epithelium and its interaction with mesenchymal cells to form the medullary cords take place in the amesonephric gonads. In a similar manner, gonadal sexual differentiation and the differentiation of steroidogenic tissue, detectable by the presence of Δ5-3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, do not appear to be affected by the absence of an organized mesonephros.

The "fictitious" scratch reflex was evoked in decerebrate curarized cats by pinna stimulation. Activity of neurons of the ventral spino-cerebellar tract ( VSCT ) from the L4 and L5 segments of the spinal cord as well as of neurons of the spino-reticulo-cerebellar pathway ( SRCP ) from the lateral reticular nucleus of the medulla oblongata was recorded. Cooling and destruction of different parts of the lumbo-sacral enlargement of the spinal cord were performed.

A total of 143 clinical deaths in cases with favourable prognosis in the acute period of myocardial infarction have been analyzed. It has been found that in 91% of cases the death was caused by primary ventricular fibrillation, in 9% by asystolia.

The bioelectrical activity of the brain was studied in 86 children in the acute period of tick-borne encephalitis and during convalescence. A total of 183 electroencephalograms were analyzed, predominantly in the subclinical form of the disease (153). The acute stage was characterized by impairments in the bioelectrical activity of the brain in children of all age groups.

The stimulation of luminescence and cell aldehyde factor during the growth of one-aldehyde-dependent mutant in the condition medium by other aldehyde-dependent mutants was studied. It was shown that the aldehyde factor is synthesized in five successive steps, thus suggesting the participation of five enzymes in aldehyde factor synthesis. The metabolite accumulation in the condition medium increases both the level of the aldehyde factor and that of luciferase.

The in vitro interaction of live bacteria belonging to virulent and avirulent Shigella and Salmonella strains with peritoneal macrophages obtained from mice immunized by the intragastric administration of these bacteria has been studied. In contrast to Salmonella-activated macrophages capable of resisting the intracellular proliferation and the cytopathic action of homologous bacteria, Shigella-activated macrophages become more sensitive to the cytopathic action of virulent shigellae. The ability of shigellae to render an aggravating cytopathic effect on the activated macrophages correlates with the virulence of dysentery bacilli and is practically absent in avirulent strains, including S.

Electron microscopic examination of the frontal cortex of a patient with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) with 14-year prolongation of life by artificial ventilation of the lungs revealed heretofore undescribed cytoplasmic virus-like inclusions in neurons and glial cells as well as changes in the granular endoplasmic reticulum in astrocytes consisting of large accumulations of ribosomes in which regular arrays were frequently observed. The discovered inclusions were not similar to any identified viral inclusions but were similar to virus-like particles found in the muscle in ALS and viral inclusions in experimental poliomyelitis. The role of the observed inclusions and their etiological importance remain obscure.

The field potentials in response to stimulation of the cerebral sensorimotor cortex and of the limb nerves were recorded in the granular layer of the cerebellar paramedian lobule in nonanesthetized cats. The field potentials contained long-latency components, i.e.

The authors analyze the development of optic disc congestion in patients with acute polyradiculoneuritis. Basing on an analysis of the brain hydrodynamics examined with the aid of the subarachnoidal infusion test, the authors come to the conclusion that the main pathogenetic factor responsible for the development of intracranial hypertension and optic disc congestion in the patients examined is the syndrome of the decreased cerebrospinal fluid absorption. It is emphasized that basic to the treatment of intracranial hypertension and optic disc edema during the disease in question should be measures aimed at the improved drainage of the cerebrospinal fluid to the cerebral venous system.

Lung function were determined in patients with neuromuscular diseases. The decrease of TLC, VC and the increase of RV were established. The ratio FEV1/VC was decreased during two months after the onset of disease in patients with acute polyradiculoneuritis and during one year after the onset of the respiratory insufficiency in patients with myasthenia gravis.

Activity of propriospinal neurons from the ventral horn of segments L4 and L3 was recorded during fictitious scratch reflex in decerebrated cats. Neurons were identified by their antidromic response to stimulation of the ventral surface of the L7 segment. Most neurons were not active during scratching.

Agenesis of the mesonephros was obtained by preventing its early induction by the Wolffian duct. In the older embryos (14 to 19 days) studied, the ovaries differentiated in the absence of the underlying mesonephros, but were reduced in size. Their different cell populations (somatic and germinal) were however present and showed typical cytological features.

An observation of a patient with malignant generalised myasthenia treated for 5 years with surgical methods (thymectomy, glomectomy) as well as with ACTH, immunosuppressors and prednisolone is described. Before prednisolone therapy and 2 years after it muscle biopsies were taken to control the effectiveness of the therapy given. Electron microscopic examination of the second biopsy revealed predominance of muscle regeneration processes over atrophy and destruction in the absence of clinical signs of recovery.
