D meson elliptic flow in noncentral Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[sNN]=2.76 Tev.

Azimuthally anisotropic distributions of D0, D+, and D*+ mesons were studied in the central rapidity region (|y|<0.8) in Pb-Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy sqrt[sNN]=2.76  TeV per nucleon-nucleon collision, with the ALICE detector at the LHC.

The systemic complications of Down syndrome (DS) attenuate the osteogenic response to physical activity in DS patients. Through an interventional study we showed the effects of physical training on development of bone mineral content (BMC) and density (BMD) as well as on quantitative bone ultrasound (QUS) parameters in individuals with DS. A total of 42 children with DS were randomly assigned to either an exercising (DS-E, n=20, age 16 ± 1.

Gas loss in simulated galaxies as they fall into clusters.

We use high-resolution cosmological hydrodynamic galaxy formation simulations to gain insights into how galaxies lose their cold gas at low redshift as they migrate from the field to the high-density regions of clusters of galaxies. We find that beyond three cluster virial radii, the fraction of gas-rich galaxies is constant, representing the field. Within three cluster-centric radii, the fraction of gas-rich galaxies declines steadily with decreasing radius, reaching <10% near the cluster center.

Influence of Genista tinctoria L. or methylparaben on subchronic toxicity of bisphenol A in rats.

Objective: To evaluate the influence of an extract of Genista tinctoria L. herba (GT) or methylparaben (MP) on histopathological changes and 2 biomarkers of oxidative stress in rats subchronicly exposed to bisphenol A (BPA).

Methods: Adult female Wistar rats were orally exposed for 90 d to BPA (50 mg/kg), BPA+GT (35 mg isoflavones/kg) or BPA+MP (250 mg/kg).

Organoselenium(II) halides containing the pincer 2,6-(Me2NCH2)2C6H3 ligand--an experimental and theoretical investigation.

New organoselenium(II) halides of the type [RSe](+)X(-) [R = 2,6-(Me2NCH2)2C6H3; X = Cl (2), Br (3), I (4)] were prepared by cleavage of the Se-Se bond in R2Se2 (1) with SO2Cl2 followed by halogen exchange when organoselenium chloride was treated with NaBr or KI. The reaction between 2 and R'2MCln resulted in new ionic [RSe](+)[R'2MCl(n+1)](-) [R' = 2-(Me2NCH2)C6H4, n = 1, M = Sb (5), Bi (6); R' = Ph, M = Sb, n = 1 (7) or n = 3 (8)] species. All new compounds were investigated in solution by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy ((1)H, (13)C, (77)Se, 2D experiments) and mass spectrometry.

Fragile X syndrome: a preclinical review on metabotropic glutamate receptor 5 (mGluR5) antagonists and drug development.

Rationale: Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is considered the leading inherited cause of intellectual disability and autism. In FXS, the fragile X mental retardation 1 (FMR1) gene is silenced and the fragile X mental retardation protein (FMRP) is not expressed, resulting in the characteristic features of the syndrome. Despite recent advances in understanding the pathophysiology of FXS, there is still no cure for this condition; current treatment is symptomatic.

Reduced response of Cystathionine Beta-Synthase (CBS) to S-Adenosylmethionine (SAM): Identification and functional analysis of CBS gene mutations in Homocystinuria patients.

A reduced response of cystathionine beta-synthase (CBS) to its allosteric activator S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) has been reported to be a cause of CBS dysfunction in homocystinuria patients. In this work we performed a retrospective analysis of fibroblast data from 62 homocystinuria patients and found that 13 of them presented a disturbed SAM activation. Their genotypic background was identified and the corresponding CBS mutant proteins were produced in E.

Variability of skin autofluorescence measurement over 6 and 12 weeks and the influence of benfotiamine treatment.

Background: Measurements of skin autofluorescence (SAF) allow for a simple and noninvasive quantification of tissue advanced glycation end-products (AGEs), a marker linked to the risk of diabetes complications. The aim of this study was to test the repeatability of SAF over 6 and 12 weeks and to test whether benfotiamine, a thiamine prodrug suggested to reduce AGEs formation under hyperglycemic conditions, is able to attenuate SAF when administered over 6 weeks.

Patients And Methods: In a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized, crossover study, 22 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) received 900 mg/day benfotiamine or placebo for 6 weeks (washout period of 6 weeks between).

Electrochemical detection and degradation of ibuprofen from water on multi-walled carbon nanotubes-epoxy composite electrode.

This work describes the electrochemical behaviour of ibuprofen on two types of multi-walled carbon nanotubes based composite electrodes, i.e., multi-walled carbon nanotubes-epoxy (MWCNT) and silver-modified zeolite-multi-walled carbon nanotubes-epoxy (AgZMWCNT) composites electrodes.

A randomized, double-blind, crossover, placebo-controlled trial of 6 weeks benfotiamine treatment on postprandial vascular function and variables of autonomic nerve function in Type 2 diabetes.

Aims: In a pilot study we suggested that benfotiamine, a thiamine prodrug, prevents postprandial endothelial dysfunction in people with Type 2 diabetes mellitus. The aim of this study was to test these effects in a larger population.

Methods: In a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized, crossover study, 31 people with Type 2 diabetes received 900 mg/day benfotiamine or a placebo for 6 weeks (with a washout period of 6 weeks between).

Silencing the majority of cerebellar granule cells uncovers their essential role in motor learning and consolidation.

Cerebellar granule cells (GCs) account for more than half of all neurons in the CNS of vertebrates. Here, we minimized the output of the majority of GCs by selectively eliminating their CaV2.

We report the first measurement of the net-charge fluctuations in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[sNN]=2.76  TeV, measured with the ALICE detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The dynamical fluctuations per unit entropy are observed to decrease when going from peripheral to central collisions.

The measurement is performed using the neutron zero degree calorimeters of the ALICE experiment, which detect neutral particles close to beam rapidity.
