The impact of 2 types of learning experiences on children's perception of multimodal emotion cues was examined. Children (aged 7-12 years) were presented with conflicting facial and vocal emotions. The effects of familiarity were tested by varying whether emotions were presented by familiar or unfamiliar adults.

Physically abused children's regulation of attention in response to hostility.

The present study examines the effects of early emotional experiences on children's regulation or strategic control of attention in the presence of interpersonal hostility. Abused children's reactions to the unfolding of a realistic interpersonal emotional situation were measured through multiple methods including autonomic nervous system changes and overt behavioral performance. Although physically abused and non-physically abused 4-year-old children did not differ in terms of their baseline levels of arousal, marked differences in physically abused children's regulatory responses to background anger emerged.

Sharp force injuries in clinical forensic medicine--findings in victims and perpetrators.

The injury findings in 58 perpetrators and 158 victims surviving bodily injuries due to sharp force are presented here. Defence injuries were found in 45.9% of the victims without any significant differences between males and females.

Autoantibodies against bactericidal/permeability-increasing protein (BPI-ANCA) in cystic fibrosis patients treated with azithromycin.

Autoantibodies against bactericidal/permeability-increasing protein (BPI-ANCA) were found in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). It is speculated that they represent a marker of the chronic endobronchial infection and sustained inflammatory response in CF. Our aim was to evaluate whether azithromycin (AZM), through its antiinflammatory effect, could affect the level of BPI-ANCA in CF patients.

A 50-year-old obese man sought medical treatment for bleeding injuries in the abdomen and thigh. According to his statement he felt a dull blow on the front of the trunk while he was feeding swans at a lake. The forensic wound findings and the examination of the clothing suggested that the injuries were caused by a single close-range gunshot with the bullet path running nearly vertically downwards and having a total length of 38 cm.

Emotion understanding in postinstitutionalized Eastern European children.

To examine the effects of early emotional neglect on children's affective development, we assessed children who had experienced institutionalized care prior to adoption into family environments. One task required children to identify photographs of facial expressions of emotion. A second task required children to match facial expressions to an emotional situation.

Cuts to the offender's own hand--unintentional self-infliction in the course of knife attacks.

In a knife attack the perpetrator can unintentionally injure his own hand, if the knife does not have an adequate handguard and the tip of the blade hits a solid, mostly bony structure while being violently thrust into the victim's body. The injuries occurring under these conditions are localized on the flexor side of the knife-holding hand and may include the index, middle, ring and little fingers. They are seen particularly often on the little finger at the level of the proximal phalanx and in the skin fold of the proximal interphalangeal joint.

Contact gunshot wounds are usually characterized by a muzzle imprint, a powder cavity ("pocket"), the presence of carboxyhemoglobin and often also stellate tears of the skin radiating from the bullet entrance hole. In shots to the cerebral cranium an additional sign may be observed around the bone defect: the periosteum is detached and reflected with soot on the underside. The frequency and possible causes of these periosteal findings are discussed on the basis of 68 contact gunshot wounds from forensic autopsy material and experimental shots fired against the frontal bone of a slaughtered calf.

Clinical forensic medicine and its main fields of activity from the foundation of the German Society of Legal Medicine until today.

The fields mainly covered by clinical forensic medicine are subject to time-related changes which are described on the basis of the German literature of the 20th century. Some fields of forensic sexual medicine (diagnosis of virginity, proof of criminal abortion, potentia coeundi, potentia generandi, potentia concipiendi) have become less important in the daily work of medicolegal institutes, whereas victims of rape and sexual abuse continue to form a major part of the forensic examination material in the German-speaking countries. The evaluation of suspected physical child abuse has grown in importance since the 60s, and it is essentially the merit of Elisabeth Trube-Becker that this problem is now dealt with also in scientific medicine.

Hemispheric asymmetries in children's perception of nonlinguistic human affective sounds.

In the present work, we developed a database of nonlinguistic sounds that mirror prosodic characteristics typical of language and thus carry affective information, but do not convey linguistic information. In a dichotic-listening task, we used these novel stimuli as a means of disambiguating the relative contributions of linguistic and affective processing across the hemispheres. This method was applied to both children and adults with the goal of investigating the role of developing cognitive resource capacity on affective processing.

The first and second hypervariable regions of the human mitochondrial DNA control region contain two homopolymeric stretches of cytosine (nt 16184-16193 and nt303-315, respectively). According to the Cambridge reference sequence these homopolymeric stretches are interrupted by thymine (T), at positions 16189 and 310, respectively. Monotonous runs of the same base have been suggested to be hot spots for mutations, probably caused by replication slippage, resulting in length heteroplasmy.

Here, we demonstrate that Abeta-binding alcohol dehydrogenase (ABAD) is a direct molecular link from Abeta to mitochondrial toxicity. Abeta interacts with ABAD in the mitochondria of AD patients and transgenic mice.
