Trapeziometacarpal Joint Arthroplasty, a Salvage Technique for Failed Open Reduction Internal Fixation of the First Metacarpal.

This report describes the case of a 61-year-old man reporting a painful subluxation and instability of the first metacarpal of the right hand after surgery for a multifragment fracture-subluxation of the thumb base. The fracture (considered irreducible) had been previously treated with K-wire stabilization of the trapeziometacarpal joint and subsequent removal of the K-wires at another clinical center. We advocate the use of trapeziometacarpal arthroplasty after the failure of open reduction internal fixation of the previous articular fracture, with successful results at follow-up.

Surgical Management of the Trapezium Canal Syndrome: An Uncommon Presentation of Tenosynovitis of Flexor Carpi Radialis.

Flexor carpi radialis (FCR) tenosynovitis is a condition characterized by pain over the volar radial wrist caused by inflammation of the FCR tendon sheath. It is an uncommon and often unrecognized pathology that could be misleading from a diagnostic and therapeutic point of view. Treatment usually involves immobilization, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and injections.

Rayleigh-Bénard convection with thermal boundary inhomogeneities.

Rayleigh-Bénard convection with nonhomogeneous thermal boundaries (sinusoidal temperature patterns set in-phase at the top and bottom plates) is numerically studied in three- and two-dimensional domains. Two spatial convective scales occur: the one due to the self-organized clustering of plumes-which is known to appear in homogeneous conditions-and the scale induced by the boundary heterogeneities. The latter drives the convection patterning, both in 3D and 2D, when the wavelength of the perturbation is comparable with the self-organized one.

Traumatic bilateral isolated palsy of Flexor Pollicis Longus: an uncommon case report.

Introduction And Importance: Flexor Pollicis Longus (FPL) lies in the volar compartment of the forearm and is responsible for the flexion of the distal phalanx of the thumb. The innervation of FPL is provided by an isolated motor branch of the anterior interosseus nerve (AIN), a branch of the median nerve. AIN disfunction causes symptoms of exclusive motor involvement concerning the FPL muscle.

The Treatment of Chronic Ulnar Collateral Ligament of the Thumb Injury Using Extensor Pollicis Brevis: Surgical Technique.

Chronic rupture of the ulnar collateral ligament of the thumb is a complex lesion that typically results in chronic joint instability, functional limitation in pinch, and persistent pain at the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint of the thumb. Different surgical techniques have been proposed, including tendon graft and transpositions. In this article, we report our experience in treating chronic ulnar collateral ligament injuries using extensor pollicis brevis tendon in a Sakellarides modified technique.

Antibiotic resistance markers for genetic manipulations of Leptospira spp.

We measured the frequency of appearance of spontaneous mutants resistant to gentamicin, kanamycin, streptomycin, and spectinomycin in saprophytic and pathogenic Leptospira strains. The mutations responsible for the spontaneous resistance to streptomycin and spectinomycin were identified in the rpsL and rrs genes, respectively. We also generated a gentamicin resistance cassette that allows the use of a third selectable marker in leptospires.

Distal radius fractures: treatment using the Epibloc system.

The Epibloc system of percutaneous endomedullary internal fixation is best indicated for AO type A2-3 extra-articular fractures of the distal radius and AO type C1 slightly comminuted articular fractures. This system includes pins that can be inserted into the medullary canal and advanced without breaking through the second cortex. This fixation is stabilised by an external plate and rendered dynamic by the pins' elasticity which compresses the fractured surfaces.

The Markov order of a time series is an important measure of the "memory" of a process, and its knowledge is fundamental for the correct simulation of the characteristics of the process. For this reason, several techniques have been proposed in the past for its estimation. However, most of this methods are rather complex, and often can be applied only in the case of Markov chains.

Compression of the lower branch of the suprascapular nerve by a cyst: description of a case and review of the literature.

Ganglion cysts responsible for compression syndrome of the lower branch of the suprascapular nerve are described, but they are rare. The authors describe a well-documented case that was treated in a traditional manner by exeresis conducted through posterior access. Pain was relieved immediately, while force in external rotation and electromyographic findings improved as early as two months after surgery.

Mechanistic analytical models for long-distance seed dispersal by wind.

We introduce an analytical model, the Wald analytical long-distance dispersal (WALD) model, for estimating dispersal kernels of wind-dispersed seeds and their escape probability from the canopy. The model is based on simplifications to well-established three-dimensional Lagrangian stochastic approaches for turbulent scalar transport resulting in a two-parameter Wald (or inverse Gaussian) distribution. Unlike commonly used phenomenological models, WALD's parameters can be estimated from the key factors affecting wind dispersal--wind statistics, seed release height, and seed terminal velocity--determined independently of dispersal data.

Use of Lymphoblastoid Namalva Cell Cultures in a Toxicity Test. Application to the Monitoring of Detoxification Procedures for Fluorocarbons to be used as Intravascular Oxygen-Carriers.

Cultures of lymphoblastoid Namalva cells have been used to check the absence of toxic impurities in fluorocarbons destined for biomedical applications. The test comprises the measurement of growth rate and viability in the presence of the fluorocarbon, and of growth after reseeding. It was used to establish a procedure for the detoxification of a family of fluorocarbons by evaluating the effect on toxicity of a series of individual or combined treatments.
