The surface stress on the real shape (biconcave disklike) of an erythrocyte under laser irradiation is theoretically studied according to the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The distribution of the surface stresses depends on the orientation of erythrocytes in the laser beam. Typically when the erythrocyte was irradiated from the side direction (the laser beam was perpendicular to the normal of the erythrocyte plane), the surface stresses were so asymmetrical and nonuniform that the magnitude of the surface stress on the back surface was three times higher than that on the front surface, and the highest-to-lowest ratio of the stress reached 16 times.

We used Southern blot analysis to screen MLL(+) in de novo AML. Reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction was used to detect the common MLL fusion transcripts.

This prospective study was conducted in an ethnic Chinese population to evaluate the correlations of ApoE genotype, cognitive performance, medial temporal structure volumes, and clinical outcome in amnestic MCI. Twenty normal elders, 58 MCI, and 20 mild Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients received neuropsychological, MRI, and ApoE genotype assessments at baseline.

Background: Past negative attitudes towards patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) have changed in recent years. However, the disclosure of AD diagnosis to patients and family remains an unresolved issue. In this study, we surveyed the family members of neurological patients in Taiwan for the purpose of assessing their attitudes towards the disclosure of AD diagnosis.

This study examines the associations between education, cerebral perfusion, and cognitive test performance among 132 patients with Alzheimer's disease. The participants had had between 0 and 19 years of formal schooling, and had either mild or moderate dementia according to the Clinical Dementia Rating Scale. Cerebral perfusion was evaluated by the (99m)Tc-hexamethylpropylene amine oxime single photon emission computed tomography.

Our purpose was to test the hypothesis that this ratio might serve as a therapeutic marker for AD patients treated with the cholinesterase inhibitor, galantamine. Thirty-nine patients (mean age 76.

Experimental Design: Mutational analysis of CEBPalpha with direct sequencing for each PCR product was done on matched bone marrow samples obtained from 50 adult patients with MDS at diagnosis and at AML transformation. Cloning analysis was used to determine the allelic distribution.
Objectives: This study was undertaken to investigate the outcome and prognostic factors in patients with ovarian germ cell malignancies (OGCMs).
Methods: A total of 93 patients with OGCMs were retrospectively reviewed, among whom 84 patients had primary treatment at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital (CGMH) between 1984 and 2003. The other nine patients were primarily treated outside and referred for follow-up (n = 1), adjuvant chemotherapy (n = 4), or salvage therapy after recurrence (n = 4).
Extensive clinical data have shown that lamivudine is an effective and safe drug for patients with chronic hepatitis B virus infection. No significant serious side effect has been reported. Four hundred and forty-eight patients with chronic hepatitis B, treated with lamivudine for more than 6 months, were closely monitored.

Several studies suggested that the neuroprotective effect of estrogen was based on an APOE-dependent mechanism. The goals of the current study were to determine if the genes involved in estrogen metabolism were linked to the risk of AD and find out if there was an interaction between estrogen-metabolizing gene polymorphisms and the APOE epsilon4 allele in the risk of prevalent AD.

The sites of involvement were the parotid gland in 13, the submandibular gland in 9 and the minor salivary gland in 1. The sites of lymphoma involvement beyond the salivary glands were the cervical lymph nodes in 7, bone marrow in 3, the axillary lymph nodes in 3, the nasopharynx in 2, the abdominal lymph nodes in 2, the palate, the subconjunctiva, and the spleen in 1 each patient.

In the current study, the authors sought to assess the value of FLT3/ITD mutation status as a prognostic genetic marker for patients with MDS.
Methods: FLT3/ITD mutation status was evaluated by performing DNA polymerase chain reaction assays on 198 bone marrow samples obtained from patients with MDS at initial diagnosis.
Fifteen patients with mild Alzheimer's disease received baseline and follow-up technetium-99m hexamethylpropylene amine oxime SPECT examinations paired with neuropsychological assessments, including the Cognitive Ability Screening Instruments (CASI). The differences between baseline and follow-up SPECT images were analyzed by the voxel-based paired t test of the statistical parametric mapping technique. A simple regression analysis was also conducted to analyze the correlation between CASI sub-scores and both sets of SPECT images.

This study was designed to investigate the possible factors that might contribute to weight change of AD patients. Experimental Design: Asp(835) mutation was analyzed by DNA PCR amplification of exon 20 of FLT3 gene followed by EcoRV digestion. All of the mutations were confirmed by sequence analysis.
This study explores the link between directed attention (DA) and getting lost behavior (GLB) in early Alzheimer's disease (AD) using a cross-sectional design with 3 groups. Based on their dementia levels, 116 community-dwelling participants were recruited from a teaching hospital in Taiwan and classified as the non-demented control, questionably demented, and mild AD groups. Statistical analyses include Pearson correlations, one-way ANOVA, and multiple regressions.

Five of the 82 patients had FLT3/ITD at presentation. Of the 70 paired samples, seven patients acquired FLT3/ITD during AML evolution.

Forty-three AD patients received a psychiatrist's interview, neuropsychological assessments, and a 99mTc-hexamethyl propyleneamine oxime single photon emission computed tomography (HMPAO-SPECT). Analysis by statistical parametric mapping (SPM) showed that the depressed group had selective hypoperfusion in the bilateral anterior and posterior cingulate gyri and precuneus.

The authors examined internal tandem duplication (ITD) and Asp835 mutations of FLT3 in patients with acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) to determine the incidence of these mutations and to analyze the results for correlations with clinicohematologic features and outcome.
Methods: Bone marrow samples from 107 patients with APL were analyzed.
The emission spectra from the pulsed discharge plasma of nitrogen, ammonia or their mixture were measured. In the discharge of pure nitrogen gas, as the pressure increased, the discharge volume decreased and more dissociation of nitrogen molecules occurred due to the higher energy density. In the discharge of ammonia, N,N+ and NH+ were observed, but no NH2 and NH3 were detected, indicating that ammonia, which has the lower dissociation and ionization energies as compared to nitrogen, was highly dissociated.

SPECT images were transformed to a standard size and shape for group comparisons by the voxel-based t test of the statistical parametric mapping techniques.
