We report on efficient and stable, type-I phase-matched second harmonic conversion of a nanosecond high-energy, diode-pumped, Yb:YAG laser. With a frequency-doubling crystal in an enclosed, temperature controller with optical windows, 0.5% energy stability was achieved for approximately half an hour.

The self is the core of our mental life which connects one's inner mental life with the external perception. Since synchrony is a key feature of the biological world and its various species, what role does it play for humans? We conducted a large-scale psychological study (n = 1072) combining newly developed visual analogue scales (VAS) for the perception of synchrony and internal and external cognition complemented by several psychological questionnaires. Overall, our findings showed close connection of the perception of synchrony of the self with both internal (i.

We report the first-ever, to the best of our knowledge, demonstration of the optical isolation of a kilowatt average power pulsed laser. A Faraday isolator capable of stable protection of the laser amplifier chain delivering 100 J nanosecond laser pulses at the repetition rate of 10 Hz has been developed and successfully tested. The isolator provided an isolation ratio of 30.

The novel method of the thermally-induced polarization changes driven power losses (TIPCL) analysis in the complex laser systems has been developed. The measurement has been tested on the amplifier chain of the 100 J / 10 Hz laser system 'Bivoj' operated at HiLASE Centre. By the usage of the measured non-uniform Mueller matrix of the amplifier chain, the optimization of the ideal input and output polarization state has been calculated numerically.

We present an adaptive optics (AO) system for a 1.94-µm laser source. Our system consists of a home-made Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor and silver-coated bimorph deformable mirror operating in a closed-loop control scheme.

We report on obtaining output energy of 146 J in 10 ns long pulses at 10 Hz repetition rate from Bivoj, a multi-Joule multi-slab cryogenic gas-cooled diode pumped solid state laser, by overcoming its damage threshold bottleneck. This is a 40% energy and power increase of the laser system in comparison to our previous publication and to the most powerful multi-Joule high power laser system.

We compare for the first time the influence of different Yb:YAG gain media on the performance of a large-area, high average-power laser system with an output energy of up to 6 J. Monocrystalline slabs grown by a new technique without central growth defect are compared with ceramics. Small signal gain, maximum output energy and thermal lensing are compared for ceramic slabs with co-sintered amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) absorber cladding, monocrystalline slab with and without optically bonded ASE absorber cladding, and surface structured monocrystalline slabs.

Introduction: The present study describes our experience with the high-flow humidified nasal cannula (HFNC) versus non-invasive ventilation (NIV) in children with severe acute asthma exacerbation (SA).

Methods: An observational study of a retrospective cohort of 42 children with SA admitted to a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) for non-invasive respiratory support was made. The primary outcome measure was failure of initial respiratory support (need to escalate from HFNC to NIV or from NIV to invasive ventilation).

We report on the successful demonstration of a 100 J-level, diode pumped solid state laser based on cryogenic gas cooled, multi-slab ceramic Yb:YAG amplifier technology. When operated at 175 K, the system delivered a pulse energy of 107 J at a 1 Hz repetition rate and 10 ns pulse duration, pumped by 506 J of diode energy at 940 nm, corresponding to an optical-to-optical efficiency of 21%. To the best of our knowledge, this represents the highest energy obtained from a nanosecond pulsed diode pumped solid state laser.

A series of model linear copolymers of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and a sterically hindered amine derivative [N-(2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-piperidin-4-yl)methacrylamide (HAS)] were synthesized and characterized. Scavenging activities of the copolymers against reactive oxygen species (peroxyl and hydroxyl radicals) and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radicals were determined. It was found that copolymers with medium HAS content (3.

The maintenance of an adequate oxygen supply to tissues after congenital heart surgery is essential for good outcomes. The objective of this study was to assess the usefulness of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) for estimating central venous oxygen saturation (ScvO2) using both cerebral and renal measurements, explore its relation with cardiac output measurements and check its ability to detect low cardiac output. A prospective observational pilot study was conducted in patients weighing <10 kg undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass surgery.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on an optical setup designed to simulate the heating and cooling in a high-average-power laser head.
  • The researchers evaluated an adaptive optics system with a photo-controlled deformable mirror and a wavefront sensor to effectively correct wavefront aberrations.
  • Different configurations of the actuator arrays and heating mechanisms were tested, and numerical results were validated through experiments comparing various deformable mirrors.

Background: At present time the number of implantations of joint replacements as well as their revisions increases. Higher demands are required on the quality and longevity of implants. The aim of this work was to determine the degree of oxidative degradation and the amount of free/residual radicals in selected ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) components of the joint replacements and demonstrate that the measured values are closely connected with quality and lifetime of the polymer components.

The author studies the profile and general characteristics of patients who suffer whatever type of accidental or voluntary drug intoxication by someone who makes use of the Mollet Hospital Emergency Ward. The author verifies the need for distinct types of nursing care, including techniques, procedures and how to administer treatment, to patients who suffer from drug intoxication, either accidental or voluntary The author also tries to discover the work load for nursing personnel which this type of patient brings to bear on an emergency service by means of the "PRN" method.

This pilot study evaluated the relationship between self-esteem, anxiety, and drug use in a nonclinical sample of 30 men, ages 16 to 43 years, who completed and returned inventories on self-esteem, trait anxiety, and drug use which they had received by mail. Analysis showed a significant negative correlation between self-esteem and drug use and a significant positive correlation between trait anxiety and drug use. Also, a significant negative correlation was found between self-esteem and trait anxiety.

In order to learn more details about the plasmalemma redox system in the alga Hydrodictyon reticulatum the electrophysiological characteristics of the plasma membrane as influenced by artificial electron acceptors were estimated. Ferricyanide anion as well as TTF+ depolarized the membrane potential, the effect being more marked in the dark than in the light. In the presence of ferricyanide the membrane resistance in the light was decreased by about 29% on the average, in the dark it remained unchanged.

We present a case of univentricular connexion to a dominant left ventricle with double orifice tricuspid valve, left atrioventricular valvar atresia, discordant ventriculo-arterial connexion and aortic arch hypoplasia. Diagnosis was made by cross-sectional echocardiography and angiocardiography. This case is exceedingly rare.

We present a study using cross-sectional echocardiography in 39 patients (29 male and 10 female) with discrete subaortic stenosis. Five parameters were evaluated in the study: the morphology of the obstruction, the distance of the stenosis from the aortic valve, the type of insertion, the base of implantation, and any associated anomalies. The lesion could be divided into groups with either fibrous or fibromuscular shelves.
