Discovery and characterization of NADH oxidases for selective sustainable synthesis of 5-hydroxymethylfuran carboxylic acid.

Efficient regeneration of NAD remains a significant challenge for oxidative biotransformations. In order to identify enzymes with higher activity and stability, a panel of NADH oxidases (Nox) was investigated in the regeneration of nicotinamide cofactors for the oxidation of hydroxymethyl furfural (HMF) to 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (HMFCA). We present novel Nox that exhibit remarkable catalytic activities, elevated thermal and pH stabilities, and higher intrinsic flavin loadings, thus eliminating the need for external flavin addition.

CHARACTERIZATION OF BASELINE SYMPTOMS AND FUNCTIONAL IMPAIRMENTS IN A LARGE COHORT OF OUTPATIENTS ATTENDING A LONG COVID REHABILITATION CLINIC IN THE UNITED KINGDOM.

Objective: In response to the high prevalence and morbidity associated with long COVID (LC), outpatient rehabilitation programmes were created across jurisdictions. We aimed to characterize baseline symptoms and impairments of patients attending outpatient LC rehabilitation.

The protracted form of COVID-19 known as 'long covid' was first described in 2020. Its symptoms, course and prognosis vary widely; some patients have a multi-system, disabling and prolonged illness. In 2021, ring-fenced funding was provided to establish 90 long covid clinics in England; some clinics were also established in Scotland and Wales.

A Photoswitchable Metallocycle Based on Azobenzene: Synthesis, Characterization, and Ultrafast Dynamics.

The novel photoswitchable ligand 3,3'-Azobenz(metPA) (1) is used to prepare a [Cu(1)](BF) metallocycle (2), whose photoisomerization was characterized using static and time-resolved spectroscopic methods. Optical studies demonstrate the highly quantitative and reproducible photoinduced cyclic E/Z switching without decay of the complex. Accordingly and best to our knowledge, [Cu(1)](BF) constitutes the first reversibly photoswitchable (3d)-metallocycle based on azobenzene.

Safety of dry needling in stroke patients: a scoping review.

Introduction: Spasticity is a common problem in stroke patients. Treatments of spasticity often have side effects or are insufficiently effective. Dry needling (DN) has been proposed as a potential additional option to consider in the multimodal treatment of post-stroke spasticity, although questions about its safety remain.

Grit, Subjective Happiness, Satisfaction With Life, and Academic Resilience Among Pharmacy and Physical Therapy Students at Two Universities.

Objective: The primary objective of this study was to compare grit, subjective happiness, satisfaction with life, and academic resilience among pharmacy and occupational therapy/physical therapy (OT/PT) students at 2 distinct universities using the short grit scale, subjective happiness scale (SHS), satisfaction with life scale (SWLS), and the academic resilience scale (ARS-30).

Methods: In January 2019, investigators administered an online survey to students at 2 universities using a cross-sectional, voluntary, anonymous survey design using grit scale, SHS, SWLS, and ARS-30. Descriptive statistics, t tests, a 2-way analysis of variance, Pearson correlation, and regression analyses were used to examine the relationship between these scores.

AACP faculty affairs standing committee report of strategies for faculty self-advocacy and promotion.

Objectives: The 2020-2021 American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Faculty Affairs Standing Committee (FASC) was charged with identifying how faculty can self-advocate and promote themselves in a social influence context.

Findings: The FASC identified social influence and persuasion theories and strategies that can be used by faculty to initiate self-advocacy discussions and collaborations. Social influence and persuasion theories can provide a framework for research and scholarship or for beginning discussions regarding self-advocacy.

Perspectives of Professionalism, Self-Awareness, Leadership, and Innovation and Entrepreneurship From Experiential Education Preceptors.

Objective: The objectives of this study were to (1) quantify the perceived importance of and comfort with the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education Standard 4 (ACPE-S4) key elements, (2) describe how preceptors promote and assess key elements, and (3) describe preceptor perceptions of student key element skill demonstration.

Methods: This study used a cross-sectional electronic survey to assess experiential education preceptors' perceptions of ACPE-S4 key elements. The survey consisted of 2 item categories, with 5 and 15 items included to collect information on preceptor demographics and ACPE-S4 key elements, respectively.

A Qualitative Exploration of ACPE Standard 4 Key Elements From the Perspective of Student Pharmacists.

Objective: Attitudes and skills reflecting the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education Standard 4 (ACPE-S4) remain an important component of pharmacy education. The objectives of this study were (1) explore student perspectives on the importance of ACPE-S4 key elements, and (2) identify experiences that students described as supporting ACPE-S4 attitude and skill development.

Methods: This was a qualitative study using focus groups and dyadic interviews with student pharmacists to collect data on ACPE-S4 key element importance and skill acquisition.

Improving sleep and learning in rehabilitation after stroke, part 2 (INSPIRES2): study protocol for a home-based randomised control trial of digital cognitive behavioural therapy (dCBT) for insomnia.

Introduction: Consolidation of motor skill learning, a key component of rehabilitation post-stroke, is known to be sleep dependent. However, disrupted sleep is highly prevalent after stroke and is often associated with poor motor recovery and quality of life. Previous research has shown that digital cognitive behavioural therapy (dCBT) for insomnia can be effective at improving sleep quality after stroke.

A case-control study comparing rates and diagnoses of hospital readmission in infants affected by neonatal abstinence syndrome.

Objective: Rates of neonatal abstinence syndrome/neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NAS/NOWS), a withdrawal syndrome from opioids and other substances resulting from intrauterine exposure, have been increasing exponentially in the U.S. To improve health outcomes, it is important to understand population health risks, including rehospitalization and related diagnoses, using current data.

Unveiling the Enhancement of Spontaneous Emission at Exceptional Points.

Exceptional points (EPs), singularities of non-Hermitian physics where complex spectral resonances degenerate, are one of the most exotic features of nonequilibrium open systems with unique properties. For instance, the emission rate of quantum emitters placed near resonators with EPs is enhanced (compared to the free-space emission rate) by a factor that scales quadratically with the resonance quality factor. Here, we verify the theory of spontaneous emission at EPs by measuring photoluminescence from photonic-crystal slabs that are embedded with a high-quantum-yield active material.

Student Perceptions of an Interprofessional Short Course Designed to Increase Awareness of Human Trafficking.

Human trafficking is a global problem with significant impacts on victims' physical and emotional health. Many health care professionals lack human trafficking knowledge, leading to missed opportunities for intervention. This cross-sectional study used evaluation data from a short course on human trafficking to evaluate the course's perceived impact on students.

Comprehensive behavioural intervention for tics: a neurophysiological intervention.

Background: Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome (GTS) is a childhood-onset neuropsychiatric disorder characterised by motor and vocal tics. While Comprehensive Behavioural Intervention for Tics (CBIT) is an effective, non-pharmacological treatment for patients with GTS, the underlying neurophysiological basis of this intervention has not been investigated.

Methods: To investigate the clinical effectiveness of CBIT in reducing tic severity in young people with GTS and explore neurophysiological mechanisms associated with clinical change.

Surgical interventions in adult upper limb spasticity management: a systematic review.

Upper limb spasticity following upper motor neuron lesion is a key cause of long-term disability in adults, causing functional loss, pain, and reduced quality of life. Surgical management is an under-utilized intervention, and little work has been performed to collate and evaluate the evidence for these interventions. We undertake the first, PRISMA-compliant systematic review synthesizing the evidence for surgical management of spasticity in adults.

Lessons From Using Design Thinking to Develop the 2021 AACP Teachers' Seminar.

To describe and evaluate how a design thinking approach aided the creation of the 2021 American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) Teachers' Seminar. The design thinking framework (ie, inspiration, ideation, and implementation) was used to structure the seminar development process from July 2020 to July 2021. Nine committee members engaged in a persona activity (ie, inspiration), a brainstorming activity (ie, ideation), and a prototyping activity (ie, implementation) to create a user-centered learning experience.

Accommodating Pharmacy Students With Physical Disabilities During the Experiential Learning Curricula.

Accommodating pharmacy students with physical disabilities during the experiential learning portion of the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) curriculum can present unique challenges for pharmacy schools. The available literature regarding accommodations for pharmacy students in the experiential learning environment is sparse, leaving programs with little guidance. This commentary from the Big Ten Academic Alliance calls on the Academy to create a community of shared resources and best practice examples and offers practical suggestions for accommodating pharmacy students with mobility, vision, and auditory disabilities during introductory pharmacy practice experiences (IPPEs) and advanced pharmacy practice experiences (APPEs).

Polyneuropathy following COVID-19 infection: the rehabilitation approach.

A range of neurological manifestations associated with COVID-19 have been reported in the literature, but the pathogenesis of these have yet to be fully explained. The majority of cases of peripheral nervous system disease published thus far have shown a symmetrical pattern. In contrast, we describe the case of a patient with asymmetrical predominantly upper-limb sensorimotor polyneuropathy following COVID-19 infection, likely due to a multifactorial pathological process involving critical illness neuropathy, mechanical injury and inflammatory disease.

Photonic-Crystal Scintillators: Molding the Flow of Light to Enhance X-Ray and γ-Ray Detection.

Scintillators are central for detection of γ-ray, x-ray, and high energy particles in various applications, all seeking higher scintillation yield and rate. However, these are limited by the intrinsic isotropy of spontaneous emission of the scintillation light and its inefficient outcoupling. We propose a new design methodology for scintillators that exploits the Purcell effect to enhance their light emission.
