Cyclodextrin dimers have been investigated as potential nanocapsules of biomolecules. The presence of two cavities can improve the stability of inclusion complexes, working as a hydrophilic sandwich of poorly water-soluble species. Here, we designed new β- and γ-cyclodextrin dimers functionalized with biotin as a targeting unit and tested the new bioconjugates as doxorubicin delivery systems in cancer cells.

Article Synopsis
  • Royal Jelly, a nutrient-rich secretion from nurse bees, is gaining attention as a functional food, but there's limited information on its chemical stability and enzymatic activity over time.
  • This study examined the effects of refrigeration and freezing on the activity of several enzymes in Royal Jelly over different storage durations, finding that refrigeration led to a significant decline in enzyme activity after one year.
  • The findings suggest that freezing preserves enzyme activity better than refrigeration, making it a preferable storage method for maintaining Royal Jelly freshness, while further research is needed to explore enzyme degradation and activity trends over longer periods.

Beta-lactam antibiotics are one of the most commonly used drug classes in managing bacterial infections. However, their use is threatened by the alarming phenomenon of antimicrobial resistance, which represents a worldwide health concern. Given the continuous spread of metallo-β-lactamases (MBLs) producing pathogens, the need to discover broad-spectrum β-lactamase inhibitors is increasingly growing.

Purpose: To evaluate patient use of opioids following arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, including the number of days and number of pills when used in combination with non-opioid medications and to determine whether patients were satisfied with their pain management and if variables such as age, sex, body mass index, duration of symptoms, anticipation of postoperative pain, preoperative opioid consumption, size of the rotator cuff tear, or anxiety/depression affected pain management.

Methods: This was a prospective cohort study of 117 prospectively enrolled patients older than the age of 18 years undergoing primary arthroscopic rotator cuff repair. All patients completed preoperative and 2-week postoperative questionnaires to assess their pain and satisfaction with pain management.

The compound DAGE (DiAcyl Glyceryl Ether, 1-stearyl-2,3-dioleoyl glycerol), present in Apis mellifera honey, is a lipidic entomological marker secreted by the salivary glands of worker bees. Its content was determined by NMR, analyzing the organic extracts of a number of Italian honeys of different floral typology. We have found that the DAGE content is related to the botanical origin of honey.

Bacteria have developed multiple resistance mechanisms against the most used antibiotics. In particular, zinc-dependent metallo-β-lactamase producing bacteria are a growing threat, and therapeutic options are limited. Zinc chelators have recently been investigated as metallo-β-lactamase inhibitors, as they are often able to restore carbapenem susceptibility.

The sugar profile in honey can be used as a fingerprint to confirm the authenticity or reveal the adulteration of the product by sweetener addition. In this work, we have accurately determined the profile of 20 minor saccharides in a set of 46 European acacia honeys using a recently proposed NMR approach based on the CSSF-TOCSY experiment. Comparison of this reference profile with the sugar composition of several Chinese honey samples of the same declared botanical origin has revealed important differences.

Cryotherapy is the use of the anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties of ice to facilitate healing. Cryotherapy mediates these salutatory effects by reducing blood flow to the site of injury, down-regulating the production of inflammatory and pain-inducing prostaglandins, and diminishing the conductive ability of nerve endings. It is commonly used postoperatively in orthopedics to decrease analgesic requirements and blood loss as well as to increase range of motion, despite limited literature on its ability to produce such therapeutic effects in clinical practice.

In this paper, a remarkably precise, simple, and objective definition of monofloral and polyfloral honey based on NMR metabolomics is proposed. The spectra of organic extracts of 983 samples of 16 botanical origins were used to derive one-versus-all OPLS-DA classification models. The predictive components of the statistical models reveal not only the principal but also the secondary floral origins present in a sample of honey, a novel feature with respect to the methods present in the literature that are able to confirm the authenticity of monofloral honeys but not to characterize a mixture of honey types.

Today in France, low attendance to cervical screening by Papanicolaou cytology (Pap-smear) is a major contributor to the 3,000 new cervical cancer cases and 1,000 deaths that occur from this disease every year. Nonattenders are mostly from lower socioeconomic groups and testing of self-obtained samples for high-risk Human Papilloma virus (HPV) types has been proposed as a method to increase screening participation in these groups. In 2011, we conducted a randomized study of women aged 35-69 from very low-income populations around Marseille who had not responded to an initial invitation for a free Pap-smear.
