Unlabelled: The aim of this study was to clarify whether common single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor-γ (PPAR-γ) gene (rs1801282) and the Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor-γ Coactivator-1 (PGC-1α) gene (rs8192673) are associated with obesity indexes (BMI, waist circumference) in subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in Caucasian population. The second aim was to find an association of both polymorphisms with T2DM.

Methods: Two exonic SNPs of both genes rs1801282 of the PPAR-γ gene and rs8192673 of the PGC-1α gene) were genotyped in 881 unrelated Slovene subjects (Caucasians) with T2DM and in 348 subjects without T2DM (control subjects).

Introduction: Granulomatosis with polyangitis (Wegener's) is an antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (PR3-ANCA)-associated vasculitis, which commonly involves the upper and lower respiratory tracts and kidneys. Central nervous system involvement is reported in less than 11%, and rarely present at onset.

Case Outline: We report the case of a 41-year-old male patient with a high disease activity, large organ involvement, as well as central nervous system manifestations presented at onset.

Endothelial-derived microparticles (EMPs) are a novel biological marker of endothelium injury and vasomotion disorders that are involved in pathogenesis of cardiovascular, metabolic, and inflammatory diseases. Circulating levels of EMPs are thought to reflect a balance between cell stimulation, proliferation, apoptosis, and cell death. Increased EMPs may be defined in several cardiovascular diseases, such as stable and unstable coronary artery disease, acute and chronic heart failure, hypertension, arrhythmias, thromboembolism, asymptomatic atherosclerosis as well as renal failure, metabolic disorders (including type two diabetes mellitus, abdominal obesity, metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance) and dyslipidemia.

Purpose: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) has features of chronic low-grade inflammation. The purpose of our study was to investigate whether the presence of inflammatory cells in fibrovascular membranes (FVMs) from patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) is associated with the activity of PDR and visual acuity improvement after vitreoretinal surgery.

Methods: Forty FVMs from 40 patients with PDR were obtained during vitrectomy, prepared by using the agar sandwich method, and examined using light microscope and immunohistochemistry methods to define the presence and density of inflammatory cells: CD45+ cells (leukocytes), CD4+ cells (T helper lymphocytes), CD8+ cells (T cytotoxic lymphocytes), CD19+ cells (B lymphocytes), and CD14+ cells (monocytes/macrophages).

2,5-Bis(hydroxymethyl)furan is a highly valuable biobased rigid diol resembling aromatic monomers in polyester synthesis. In this work, it was enzymatically polymerized with various diacid ethyl esters by Candida antarctica Lipase B (CALB) via a three-stage method. The paper presents clinical case of 63 years old edentulous patient with slight class III malocclusion. For 15 years he was using inadequately fabricated dentures causing forced severe class III malocclusion.
