The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of exogenously added pancreatic phospholipase A2 (pPLA2) on the production of reactive oxygen species by human polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs). Pancreatic PLA2 was used because PMNs do not possess a receptor for that enzyme and, therefore, the receptor-mediated effects could be excluded. Respiratory burst activity of PMNs was monitored by luminol-amplified chemiluminescence and the lipid composition of neutrophils after treatment with pPLA2 was determined by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionisation time-of-flight mass spectrometry.

It has been previously shown that the sequence similarity between a portion of the envelope glycoprotein 120 (gp120) from the human immunodeficiency virus type-1 (HIV-1) and several types of human collagen and collagen-like molecules exists. That observation led to the suggestion that the antibodies against the third hypervariable region (V3) of HIV-1 gp120 (V3-specific antibodies) might have a role in the autoimmune phenomena observed in HIV-infected persons. In this study we have examined the cross-reactivity of the V3-specific antibodies purified from sera of HIV-infected individuals, sera obtained from the rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus crythematosus patients, as well as from the sera of healthy volunteers with the separate chains of a subcomponent of the first component of the human complement system, Clq.

The contribution of superoxide anion radicals and myeloperoxidase (MPO) to Pholasin luminescence in stimulated neutrophils was investigated. Data on Pholasin luminescence were compared with results of superoxide anion radical generation detected by the cytochrome c test as well as with the release of elastase and MPO.

However, there is growing evidence that also phospholipids like phosphatidylcholines (PC) can be easily analyzed by MALDI-TOF MS. In MALDI-TOF methodology, the sample is cationized by the addition of inorganic ions.

Because destruction of lipids leads to the formation of well-defined products such as lysophospholipids or chlorohydrins, methods that allow their fast and reliable determination would be useful. In this study, matrix-assisted laser desorption and ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) was applied for the analysis of the lipid composition of human lipoproteins.

The mean signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) was used for the first time as a measure of lysophospholipid concentration. Two different sample preparation procedures were applied, the 'standard' procedure and the 'premix' in order to check to what extent these methods influence the results of the lysophospholipid quantification.

Here, MALDI-TOF MS was used for the detection of (poly-)phosphoinositides (PPI). PPI possess higher molecular weights than other phospholipids and a high phosphorylation-dependent negative charge.

This method works well with phospholipids as well as organic cell extracts and provides high sensitivity and reproducibility. The aim of the present paper is to extend our previous studies to the analysis of lysophospholipids and phospholipid mixtures.

PGM-Zn in nondepleted mice stimulated the PFC generation and IgM or IgG and IgG1 production in primary and secondary reaction. Single depletion of CD4 or CD8+ T cells did not change this ability.

We report an unusual case of ALCL in a 42-year-old woman. For ten years the patient only had pruritic erythematous skin lesions, then a plaque with nodules and ulcers on the right thigh and leg developed, followed by ichthyosis acquisita.

For this purpose, the dynamics of hepatic, thymic, splenic, and renal Zn content was determined in mice sensitized with (a) sheep red blood cells and (b) semiallogeneic lymphocytes during the local host vs graft reaction (HVGR). The data obtained by ion-coupled plasma spectrometry revealed that the humoral type of immunity is characterized by a significant increase of Zn concentration in the liver and in the thymus.

Since it is well known that both zinc ions and bacterial immunostimulants influence the function of the immune system, in the present study we investigated the immunomodulating activity of a new analog of peptidoglycan monomer (PGM), in which the basic molecule was linked to zinc (PGM-Zn). Its effects in BALB/c mice, aged 10-12 months, were compared with the effects of equimolar doses of PGM and ZnCl2. The treatment lasted 26 days (one i.

Background: To determine if ready access to a sodium-containing beverage ameliorates life-threatening water imbalance, we compared Gatorade to water in an ABA design.
Method: Four male chronic schizophrenic inpatients with symptomatic hyponatremia drank water for 1 week, Gatorade plus water for 3 weeks, and then water again for 1 week. Afternoon plasma osmolality and morning serum sodium levels were used to estimate hydration status, and morning and afternoon urine creatinine concentrations were used to estimate fluid intake.
