Estrogen receptors (ER) and progesterone receptors (PR) were determined on curettages from women with endometrial adenocarcinoma. The results obtained with the enzyme immunoassay (EIA) and the dextran-coated charcoal (DCC) assay were compared. A highly significant correlation was obtained between these methods for the ER measurement (Rs = 0.

Our purpose is to analyse local control, complications relative to the proportion of total dose delivered by external beam irradiation versus interstitial implant in 147 patients with previously untreated T2N0 squamous cell carcinoma of the oral tongue, managed between 1973 and 1986 (UICC staging system). These T2N0 patients are part of a larger group of 430 patients with oral tongue carcinoma (T1, T2, T3) treated with irradiation alone. Of these 147 T2N0 patients, 70 were treated with interstitial implant alone and 77 with both external beam irradiation and implant.

From 1977 to 1987, 277 patients with velotonsillar cancer (oropharyngeal cancer excluding base of tongue and valleculae) were treated by brachytherapy either alone (14 patients) or combined with external beam irradiation (263 patients) using a new afterloading Iridium-192 technique. The distribution of patients according to the localisation was as follows: 106 tonsillar region, 98 soft palate, 45 anterior pillar, 8 posterior pillar and 20 pharyngoglossal sulcus. According to the UICC TNM classification of 1979, the patients were staged as follows: 65 T1, 103 T2, 101 T3, 8 TX.

Interstitial irradiation is a technique currently used in the treatment of bladder cancer. We report the data on 205 patients (177 men and 28 women) treated in eight French centers. The patients had received the following treatment: a short course of pre-operative pelvic irradiation, followed by surgery consisting of partial cystectomy or tumor resection, and implantation of plastic tubes filled with inactive lead wires, which were replaced by iridium 192 wires.

Mixed Mullerian Tumours (MMT) of the endometrium have a bad reputation as far as prognosis is concerned. We have studied 34 cases of MMT treated between 1976 and 1988 and have compared their outcome with a matched series of 68 cases of adenocarcinoma (ADC). These were taken out of 880 cases of ADC treated during this period of time after matching them for the stage, the type of treatment, the year of treatment and the age of the patient.

A practical interstitial capacitive method of heating using thin flexible coated electrodes operating at 27.12 MHz is described. Advantages compared to classical interstitial methods are: uniform heating, control of the inserted length, compatibility with curie therapy, simplicity and low cost.

Surgery with adjuvant radiation is the definitive method for treating patients with Stage I and II FIGO endometrial carcinoma. However, radiation therapy alone becomes the only curative alternative for patients who presented with severe, acute, and chronic medical illnesses which prevented surgical management. We report on 104 such patients treated at Centre Alexis Vautrin in Nancy (FRANCE) between 1975 and 1984.

Between 1972 and 1984, 123 patients were treated using 192 Iridium afterloading techniques for recurrence or new cancer of the tongue or oropharynx arising in previously irradiated tissues. The actuarial local control was 67% at 2 years and 59% at 5 years. Local control of the tumor was achieved in the majority of these patients, the actuarial survival was only 48% at 2 years and 24% at 5 years.

Between 1972 and 1984, 123 patients with recurrent or new primary carcinomas in previously irradiated areas of soft palate, tonsil, base of tongue or mobile tongue were re-irradiated with iridium-192 afterloading techniques. The average re-irradiation dose was 62 Gy (31-84 Gy) and the total dose 131 Gy (92-162 Gy); only 28 cases of mucosal necrosis were observed (23%). Two and 5 years actuarial local control rates were 67% and 59% and survival rates 48% and 24% respectively.

As reporting 42 cases of carcinoma of the nasopharynx, the main characteristics of these tumors which are different of the other carcinomas of the head and neck are exposed. In this series, there are 31 men and 11 women with ages between 13 and 75. The diagnosis was late (80% of palpable lymph nodes and 40% with bone invasion or nerve palsy at diagnosis).

The description of an intrauterine device for the application of local radiotherapy in non-radioactive preparation. The device consists of polyethylene tubes froming two perpendicular loops joined and fixed and their topmost point by ligature. A traction wire is used to open these loops, therby obtaining a cuboid target-volume from four radioactive lines.
