Aerosols and droplets generated by dental procedures are contaminated with blood and bacteria and represent a potential route for the transmission of disease. This study sought to determine if Ionic Breeze air purifiers are effective in collecting and destroying bacteria found in dental aerosols (such as Staphylococcus aureus). This study placed one Sharper Image Professional Series Ionic Breeze Quadra unit and one Ionic Breeze GP unit (with germicidal protection) in dental operatories within the Louisiana State University School of Dentistry.

Bacterial cells possess a negative electrical charge, while the cathode ray tubes (CRT) that are used in computer monitors generate positively charged static electric fields. Consequently, bacteria dispersed within these aerosols could be attracted to the screens on CRT monitors.

Numerous studies have been conducted with the goal of eliminating this organism from raw oysters. We utilized two natural oyster-associated components: pooled Vibrio vulnificus-specific bacteriophage and an extract of the eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) that contains an antimicrobial component we named anti-Vibrio vulnificus factor, which is bactericidal for V.

Methods: Streams of air of 30 seconds' duration from air-water syringes were forced through sterile modified stainless steel membrane filter holders (Millipore, Millipore Corp., Bedford, Mass.
Nine phage isolates infectious for Vibrio vulnificus and falling into four morphological groups were isolated from estuarine waters collected in Louisiana. Of the 60 V. vulnificus strains tested, 87% were susceptible to one or more of the isolates.

Gastric juice samples from patients of a rural area of the Colombian Andes at high risk to gastric cancer were tested for mutagenesis with Salmonella typhimurium strains TA100 and TA1538. Direct mutagenic effect was found in samples with detectable amounts of nitrite. This effect was not accountable by nitrite alone.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA serologic comparison was performed by immune electron microscopy between hepatitis A antigen (related to the MS-1 strain of hepatitis A virus) and a viral isolate, CR69(076), from the stool of a patient in Costa Rica with viral hepatitis. CR69(076) was not antigenically related to hepatitis A antigen but was related to echovirus 25. Thus, it is unrelated to the MS-1 strain of hepatitis A virus.
