Objectives: During 2015-2018, a randomised controlled trial (RCT) evaluated eRAPID, an eHealth intervention designed to capture patient-reported symptoms online during cancer treatment. eRAPID provides patients with advice on when to self-manage or seek medical support. Clinicians accessed symptom reports within electronic patient records.

Dyspnea and Palliative Care in Advanced Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: A Rapid Review.

Dyspnea is the most common and activity-limiting symptom for those with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Treatment is complex, palliative care (PC) dyspnea relief interventions are poorly understood, and PC remains underutilized in COPD despite national guidelines and recommendations. The purpose of this rapid review was to explore the concept of dyspnea and role of PC through the lens of providers, caregivers, and patients with COPD.

Ligand Chirality Transfer from Solution State to the Crystalline Self-Assemblies in Circularly Polarized Luminescence (CPL) Active Lanthanide Systems.

The synthesis of a family of chiral and enantiomerically pure pyridyl-diamide (pda) ligands that upon complexation with europium [Eu(CFSO)] result in chiral complexes with metal centered luminescence is reported; the sets of enantiomers giving rise to both circular dichroism (CD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) signatures. The solid-state structures of these chiral metallosupramolecular systems are determined using X-ray diffraction showing that the ligand chirality is transferred from solution to the solid state. This optically favorable helical packing arrangement is confirmed by recording the CPL spectra from the crystalline assembly by using steady state and enantioselective differential chiral contrast (EDCC) CPL Laser Scanning Confocal Microscopy (CPL-LSCM) where the two enantiomers can be clearly distinguished.

Fifteen years of shared care for paediatric oncology, haematology and palliative patients across Queensland: The role of Regional Case Managers.

Objective: A shared care model was implemented in 2006 in Queensland to facilitate paediatric oncology, haematology and palliative care patients receiving care as close to home as possible. Following initial diagnosis, care planning and treatment at the tertiary children's hospital, appropriate local care was coordinated by Regional Case Managers (RCMs) established at each of 10 Shared Care Units (SCUs). This enabled safe and quality regional care supported by a statewide network providing clinical governance and education.

Characteristics and outcomes of dog attacks to dogs and cats in Melbourne, Australia: A retrospective study of 459 cases (2018).

Dog-dog and dog-cat attacks can result in severe medical, financial, and emotional injury to pets and owners. The characteristics of dog-dog and dog-cat attack victims, the circumstances surrounding these attacks and the financial burden from veterinary visits is not reported in Australia. Medical records from 459 animals that were presented to the emergency service of four specialty hospitals in Melbourne, Australia in 2018 following a dog attack were assessed via univariate and multivariate methodologies with a retrospective case-control study design.

Objective: This study aimed to explore experiences of follow-up after treatment and views on an electronic patient-reported outcome (ePRO) pathway among ovarian cancer patients and clinicians.

Methods: Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with clinicians and patients previously treated for ovarian cancer. Interviews explored experiences of the current follow-up pathway, patients' needs and views on an ePRO pathway enabling patients to report symptoms online rather than attend clinic-based appointments.

How Thrombomodulin Enables W215A/E217A Thrombin to Cleave Protein C but Not Fibrinogen.

The W215A/E217A mutant thrombin is called "anticoagulant thrombin" because its activity toward its procoagulant substrate, fibrinogen, is reduced more than 500-fold whereas in the presence of thrombomodulin (TM) its activity toward its anticoagulant substrate, protein C, is reduced less than 10-fold. To understand how these mutations so dramatically alter one activity over the other, we compared the backbone dynamics of wild type thrombin to those of the W215A/E217A mutant thrombin by hydrogen-deuterium exchange coupled to mass spectrometry (HDX-MS). Our results show that the mutations cause the 170s, 180s, and 220s C-terminal β-barrel loops near the sites of mutation to exchange more, suggesting that the structure of this region is disrupted.

Marijuana toxicosis in dogs in Melbourne, Australia, following suspected ingestion of human faeces: 15 cases (2011-2020).

This retrospective case series describes a novel and unexpected source for marijuana toxicosis in dogs; suspected ingestion of human faeces containing Δ -tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Medical records from four, 24-h veterinary emergency hospitals in Melbourne, Australia, were reviewed and 15 dogs met the criteria for inclusion in this case series. Clinical signs of marijuana toxicosis included ataxia (n = 13), mydriasis (n = 6), hyperaesthesia (n = 5), urinary incontinence (n = 4) and stupor (n = 3).

Research was conducted to examine the use of Support Vector Regression (SVR) to build a model to forecast the potential occurrence of flashover in a single-floor, multi-room compartment fire. Synthetic temperature data for heat detectors in different rooms were generated, 1000 simulation cases are considered, and a total of 8 million data points are utilized for model development. An operating temperature limitation is placed on heat detectors where they fail at a fixed exposure temperature of 150 °C and no longer provide data to more closely follow actual performance.

Hydrogen/Deuterium Exchange and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy Reveal Dynamic Allostery on Multiple Time Scales in the Serine Protease Thrombin.

A deeper understanding of how hydrogen/deuterium exchange mass spectrometry (HDX-MS) reveals allostery is important because HDX-MS can reveal allostery in systems that are not amenable to nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. We were able to study thrombin and its complex with thrombomodulin, an allosteric regulator, by both HDX-MS and NMR. In this Perspective, we compare and contrast the results from both experiments and from molecular dynamics simulations.

Methods: We conducted a systematic search for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of IDIs for HIV prevention, defining 'interactive' as producing personally tailored material.

Fiddling while Rome burns? Conducting research with healthcare staff when the NHS is in crisis.

Purpose: Health research in the UK is being impeded by a stretched NHS system. The purpose of this paper is to use the Great Fire of Rome as an allegory to understand the difficulties encountered by health researchers when attempting to conduct research within a healthcare system that is currently in crisis.

Design/methodology/approach: The paper draws on both the authors' own and other research teams' experiences from the published literature in order to demonstrate that this difficulty is a widespread problem for the health research community in the UK.

Amide hydrogen/deuterium exchange mass spectrometry (HDXMS) of proteins has become extremely popular for identifying ligand-binding sites, protein-protein interactions, intrinsic disorder, and allosteric changes upon protein modification. Such phenomena are revealed when amide exchange is measured in the fast limit, that is, within a few minutes of exchange in deuterated buffer. The HDXMS data have a resolution of the length of peptides and are difficult to interpret because many different phenomena lead to changes in hydrogen/deuterium exchange.
