Although the existence of coral-reef habitats at depths to 165 m in tropical regions has been known for decades, the richness, diversity, and ecological importance of mesophotic coral ecosystems (MCEs) has only recently become widely acknowledged. During an interdisciplinary effort spanning more than two decades, we characterized the most expansive MCEs ever recorded, with vast macroalgal communities and areas of 100% coral cover between depths of 50-90 m extending for tens of km in the Hawaiian Archipelago. We used a variety of sensors and techniques to establish geophysical characteristics.

Background: The management of distal radial fractures is guided by the interpretation of radiographic findings. The aim of this investigation was to determine the intra- and inter-observer reliability of eight traditionally reported anatomic radiographic parameters in adults with an acute distal radius fracture.

Methods: Five observers participated.

Mesophotic hard corals (MHC) are increasingly threatened by a growing number of anthropogenic stressors, including impacts from fishing, land-based sources of pollution, and ocean acidification. However, little is known about their geographic distributions (particularly around the Pacific islands) because it is logistically challenging and expensive to gather data in the 30 to 150 meter depth range where these organisms typically live. The goal of this study was to begin to fill this knowledge gap by modelling and predicting the spatial distribution of three genera of mesophotic hard corals offshore of Maui in the Main Hawaiian Islands.

Three trophic mass-balance models representing coral reef ecosystems along a fishery gradient were compared to evaluate ecosystem effects of fishing. The majority of the biomass estimates came directly from a large-scale visual survey program; therefore, data were collected in the same way for all three models, enhancing comparability. Model outputs-such as net system production, size structure of the community, total throughput, production, consumption, production-to-respiration ratio, and Finn's cycling index and mean path length-indicate that the systems around the unpopulated French Frigate Shoals and along the relatively lightly populated Kona Coast of Hawai'i Island are mature, stable systems with a high efficiency in recycling of biomass.

Acute otitis media (AOM) is a common condition in children that is often treated with systemic antibiotic therapy; however, research suggests that non-complicated AOM will resolve spontaneously using only eardrops. To determine best practice for the use of systematic antibiotics compared to topical treatment of AOM, a systematic review of evidence was conducted. Cochrane, Medline, CINAHL, and other databases were searched.

Aim: To determine the efficacy and safety of self-administered, inhaled analgesic, methoxyflurane, used to improve patient comfort during computed tomography enteroclysis (CTE).

Materials And Methods: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was performed at two Australian hospitals (one tertiary referral public hospital and one private hospital). Patients were randomized to 3 ml methoxyflurane or saline (scented to maintain blindness) via hand-held inhaler.

Small bowel carcinoid tumours are endocrine tumours of the gastrointestinal tract. This pictorial essay will review the pathology, clinical features, treatment and prognosis and illustrate the radiographic, computed tomographic, sonographic, magnetic resonance and nuclear medicine appearances of small bowel carcinoid tumours.

Background: Computed tomography enteroclysis (CTE) may be superior to other small bowel imaging techniques, detecting subtle mucosal lesions and extraluminal pathology. This study aimed to define the technical success, clinical influence and tolerance of CTE in patients with suspected small bowel disease.

Methods: CTE scans of 42 consecutive patients (aged 21-78 years, 12 men) were reviewed by a single radiologist for technical adequacy and diagnosis.

Under a congressional mandate, VA and DoD have built a framework to exchange standardized, codified patient drug allergy information through a mediation terminology. Initially, the Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) was deemed to be the most appropriate translator. After both agency files were mapped to UMLS, DoD could understand 45 percent of VA's mapped terms and VA could understand 26 percent of DoD's mapped terms.

Complete patient health information that is available where and when it is needed is essential to providers and patients and improves healthcare quality and patient safety. VA and DoD have built on their previous experience in patient data exchange to establish data standards and terminology services to enable real-time bi-directional computable (i.e.

Objective: CT has undergone generational change that has led to true volume imaging. Interpretation of volume images requires interaction between the radiologist and the volume data sets. The aim of this review is to examine postprocessing options and the evidence in the literature for changing the process of reporting to digital volume reporting.

The federal government is working toward its goal of achieving interoperability between health information systems through several multi-agency efforts. While some interoperability partnerships exist between federal agencies, only a few systems are involved and these projects have proven difficult to implement. This paper describes the process of implementing an interoperable standard for exchanging computable pharmacy data between the Department of Defense (DoD) and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Computed tomography small bowel enteroclysis has been carried out at Noosa Hospital since July 2003, and more recently at St George Private Hospital, Kogarah. Over 125 cases have been carried out. This article describes the different techniques, the pitfalls and a pictorial review of small bowel pathology.

An evaluation of porcine longissimus myoglobin concentration was conducted to determine breed and gender differences for myoglobin content, estimate genetic parameters for myoglobin concentration, and determine the relationship between myoglobin content and objective measures of muscle color. Data from centrally tested (n = 255), purebred Yorkshire (42), Duroc (61), Hampshire (17), Chester White (28), Berkshire (67), Poland China (28), and Landrace (12) barrows and gilts from the 1999 National Barrow Show Sire Progeny Test were used. Ultimate pH and Hunter L were measured on the 10th-rib face 24 h postmortem.

Three experiments were conducted to determine whether feeding 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (25-OH D3) or 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1,25-(OH)2 D3) improves the tenderness of longissimus dorsi (LD), semimembranosus (SM), and infraspinatus (IF) muscles similar to supplemental vitamin D3 without leaving residual vitamin D3 and its metabolites in muscle. In the first two experiments, 24 crossbred steers were used to determine the effects of different oral amounts of 1,25-(OH)2 D3 (Exp. 1; n = 12) and 25-OH D3 (Exp.

Effects of irradiation (2 kGy) of ground beef patties from trimmings stored aerobically for 0 or 6 days on lean color, odor, and sensory attributes were investigated. Beef trimings were coarse ground and split into 2 groups. Group one was fine ground, pattied, and packaged immediately; group-two was stored 6 days then fine ground, pattied, and packaged.

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of short-term feeding of vitamin D3 (D3) on blood plasma calcium concentrations and meat quality of pork-loin chops. Three experiments were carried out to meet this objective. Experiment 1 used 250,000 IU and 500,000 IU/d to determine the effective dose of dietary D3 to raise blood plasma calcium concentration.
