Barley leaf rust (BLR), caused by is best controlled through genetic resistance. An efficient resistance breeding program prioritizes the need to identify, characterize, and map new sources of resistance as well as understanding the effectiveness, structure, and function of resistance genes. In this study, three mapping populations were developed by crossing Israelian barley lines "AGG-396," "AGG-397," and "AGG-403" (carrying unknown leaf rust resistance) with a susceptible variety "Gus" to characterize and map resistance.

It is estimated that hearing loss currently affects more than 1.5 billion people, or approximately 20% of the global population; however, presently, there are no Food and Drug Administration-approved therapeutics or prophylactics for this condition. While continued research on the development of otoprotective drugs to target this clear unmet need is an obvious path, there are numerous challenges to translating promising therapeutic candidates into human clinical testing.

C1q and TNF-related 1 (C1QTNF1/CTRP1) is an adiponectin-associated protein belonging to the C1q/TNF-related protein family. Recent studies have shown that the C1q and TNF-related protein (CTRP) family is involved in cancer progression; however, the specific role of CTRP1 in tumor progression has not yet been elucidated. To examine the role of CTRP1 in tumor progression, we generated CTRP1 knockout A549 and HCT116 cell lines, which reduced the expression levels of nuclear factor (NF)-κB-dependent and metastasis-promoting transcripts.

Root canal treatment is performed to remove the bacteria proliferating in the root canals of a tooth. Many conventional root canal irrigation methods use an instrument inserted into the root canals. However, bacteria removal is often incomplete in the apical region of the root canal, and the treatment carries clinical risks, such as instrument fracture and extrusion of irrigation liquid through the canal apex.

Background: The American College of Cardiology Core Cardiovascular Training Statement (COCATS) defined echocardiography core competencies and set the minimum recommend number of echocardiograms to perform (150) and interpret (300) for independent practice in echocardiography (level 2 training). Fellows may lack exposure to key pathologies that are relatively infrequent, however, even when achieving an adequate number of studies performed and interpreted. We hypothesized that cardiology fellows would lack exposure to 1 or more cardiac pathologies related to core competencies in COCATS when performing and interpreting the minimum recommend number of studies for level 2 training.

As a new concept in materials design, a variety of strategies have been developed to fabricate optical microlens arrays (MLAs) that enable the miniaturization of optical systems on the micro/nanoscale to improve their characteristic performance with unique optical functionality. In this paper, we introduce a cost-effective and facile fabrication process on a large scale up to ~15 inches via sequential lithographic methods to produce thin and deformable hexagonally arranged MLAs consisting of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Simple employment of oxygen plasma treatment on the prestrained MLAs effectively harnessed the spontaneous formation of highly uniform nanowrinkled structures all over the surface of the elastomeric microlenses.

Leaf rust of barley causes significant losses in crops of susceptible cultivars. Deploying host resistance is the most cost-effective and eco-sustainable strategy to protect the harvest. However, most known leaf rust resistance genes have been overcome by the pathogen due to the pathogen's evolution and adaptation.

Background: Programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) has functional roles in cancer stem-like cell (CSC) phenotypes and chemoresistance besides immune evasion. Chemotherapy is a common treatment choice for colorectal cancer (CRC) patients; however, chemoresistance limits its effectiveness of treatment.

Methods: We examined the role of S100A14 (SA14) in CRC by adopting PD-L1 subpopulations within CRC cell lines and patient tumours, by establishing PD-L1 chemoresistant CRC sublines through prolonged exposure to 5-fluorouracil/oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy in vitro and in vivo, and by analysing a public database.

Breeding for leaf rust resistance has been successful worldwide and is underpinned by the discovery and characterisation of genetically diverse sources of resistance. An English scientist, Arthur Watkins, collected pre-Green Revolution wheat genotypes from 33 locations worldwide in the early part of the 20th Century and this collection is now referred to as the 'Watkins Collection'. A common wheat genotype, Aus27352 from Yugoslavia, showed resistance to currently predominating Australian pathotypes of the wheat leaf rust pathogen.

Genetic compensation has been proposed to explain phenotypic differences between gene knockouts and knockdowns in several metazoan and plant model systems. With the rapid development of reverse genetic tools such as CRISPR/Cas9 and RNAi in microalgae, it is increasingly important to assess whether genetic compensation affects the phenotype of engineered algal mutants. While exploring triacylglycerol (TAG) biosynthesis pathways in the model alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, it was discovered that knockout of certain genes catalyzing rate-limiting steps of TAG biosynthesis, type-2 diacylglycerol acyltransferase genes (DGTTs), triggered genetic compensation under abiotic stress conditions.
