The increasing recognition of the right ventricle (RV) necessitates the development of RV-focused interventions, devices and testbeds. In this study, we developed a soft robotic model of the right heart that accurately mimics RV biomechanics and hemodynamics, including free wall, septal and valve motion. This model uses a biohybrid approach, combining a chemically treated endocardial scaffold with a soft robotic synthetic myocardium.

Introduction: Apical periodontitis, mainly caused by bacterial infection in the dental pulp, is often accompanied by abscess, periapical inflammation, and alveolar bone loss. Lancefieldella rimae has been detected in the root canals of patients with apical periodontitis. Here, we investigated whether L.

Animals adapt to environmental conditions by modifying the function of their internal organs, including the brain. To be adaptive, alterations in behavior must be coordinated with the functional state of organs throughout the body. Here, we find that thyroid hormone-a regulator of metabolism in many peripheral organs-directly activates cell-type-specific transcriptional programs in the frontal cortex of adult male mice.

This study investigated whether the large language model (LLM) utilizes sufficient domain knowledge to reason about critical medical events such as extubation. In detail, we tested whether the LLM accurately comprehends given tabular data and variable importance and whether it can be used in complement to existing ML models such as XGBoost.

In the delivery room, fetal well-being is evaluated through laboratory tests, biosignals like cardiotocography, and imaging techniques such as fetal echocardiography. We have developed a multimodal machine learning model that integrates medical records, biosignals, and imaging data to predict fetal acidosis, using a dataset from a tertiary hospital's delivery room (n=2,266). To achieve this, features were extracted from unstructured data sources, including biosignals and imaging, and then merged with structured data from medical records.

Background And Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the outcomes of Fontan surgery in the Republic of Korea, as there were only a few studies from Asian countries.

Methods: The medical records of 1,732 patients who underwent Fontan surgery in 10 cardiac centers were reviewed.

Results: Among them, 1,040 (58.

Article Synopsis
  • Atherogenic dyslipidemia is a condition linked to type 2 diabetes that can cause serious heart problems.
  • Statins are usually the main medicine given to help lower cholesterol, but researchers want to see if combining them with other drugs like ezetimibe and fibrates can work better.
  • In a study with nearly 4,000 people, scientists will compare the effects of adding ezetimibe and fibrates to statins versus just increasing the dose of statins alone, looking for improvements over four years.

Stem cell-based therapies offer promising avenues for treating inflammatory diseases owing to their immunomodulatory properties. However, challenges persist regarding their survival and efficacy in inflamed tissues. Our study introduces a novel approach by engineering adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) to enhance their viability in inflammatory environments and boost the secretion of paracrine factors for treating inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

Obesity often leads to inadequate angiogenesis in expanding adipose tissue, resulting in inflammation and insulin resistance. We explored the role of placental growth factor (PlGF) in metabolic syndrome (MS) using mice models of type 2 diabetes, high-fat diet, or aging. Reduced serum PlGF levels were associated with decreased insulin sensitivity and development of MS features.

Statin is crucial for acute myocardial infarction (AMI) patients. However, the risk of new-onset diabetes mellitus (NODM) associated with statin is a concern. This study aimed to determine the incremental diabetogenic effects of statins according to their intensity and dose in AMI patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).

The introduction of endoscopic spine surgery has led to a paradigm shift in the treatment of spinal disorders. In particular, biportal endoscopic surgery has gained traction for its wider visual field and improved the maneuverability of instruments, familiar anatomy, and costeffectiveness. In this study, we describe our en bloc removal of the ligamentum flavum using a "butterfly" technique.

With the advent of the information age, electromagnetic hazards are becoming more serious. In view of environmental protection, green electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials with little or no secondary reflection have become the ideal choice. In this paper, by freeze-drying, high-temperature carbonization, coating and impregnation backfilling, we prepared carbonized Ni-MOF/reduced graphene oxide/silver nanowire-polyimide@polyethylene glycol composites (Ni@C/r-GO/AgNW-PI@PEG) with gradient conductivity based on impedance matching.

Iron and myelin are primary susceptibility sources in the human brain. These substances are essential for a healthy brain, and their abnormalities are often related to various neurological disorders. Recently, an advanced susceptibility mapping technique, which is referred to as χ-separation (pronounced as "chi"-separation), has been proposed, successfully disentangling paramagnetic iron from diamagnetic myelin.

Objectives: This study compared the scientific publication speeds of Korean medical journals before and during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) era.

Methods: We analyzed 2,064 papers from 43 international Korean medical journals, selecting 12 papers annually from 2019 to 2022. We assessed publication speed indicators, including the time from submission to revision and from submission to publication.

  • * Findings revealed that women with UL had a higher incidence rate of T2DM compared to those without, with a hazard ratio indicating a significantly increased risk, particularly in those who did not undergo myomectomy.
  • * The results suggested that young women with UL are at a greater risk of developing T2DM, but undergoing myomectomy may reduce this risk.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most frequent neurodegenerative disorder in the elderly aged over 65. The extracellular accumulation of beta-amyloid (Aβ) aggregates in the brain is considered as the major event worsening the AD symptoms, but its underlying reason has remained unclear. Here the piezoelectric characteristics of Aβ aggregates are revealed.

Organic charge-transfer complex (CTC) formation has emerged as an effective molecular engineering strategy for achieving the desired optical properties via intermolecular interactions. By synthesizing organic CTCs with carbazole-based electron donors and a 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane acceptor and adopting a molecular linker located remotely from the charge-transfer interface within the donors, we were able to modulate near-infrared absorptive and short-wavelength infrared emissive properties. Structural characterizations performed by using single-crystal X-ray diffraction confirmed that the unique molecular arrangements induced by the steric hindrance from the remotely located linker significantly influence the electronic interactions between the donor and acceptor molecules, resulting in different photophysical properties.

The fate of developing T cells is determined by the strength of T cell receptor (TCR) signal they receive in the thymus. This process is finely regulated through the tuning of positive and negative regulators in thymocytes. The Family with sequence similarity 49 member B (Fam49b) protein is a newly discovered negative regulator of TCR signaling that has been shown to suppress Rac-1 activity in vitro in cultured T cell lines.

Background: Calmodulinopathies are rare inherited arrhythmia syndromes caused by dominant heterozygous variants in , , or , which each encode the identical CaM (calmodulin) protein. We hypothesized that antisense oligonucleotide (ASO)-mediated depletion of an affected calmodulin gene would ameliorate disease manifestations, whereas the other 2 calmodulin genes would preserve CaM level and function.

Methods: We tested this hypothesis using human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocyte and mouse models of pathogenic variants.
