The present study is the first meta-analysis comparing long-term outcomes in patients undergoing correction for anomalous left coronary artery (ALCAPA) regarding concomitant mitral valve surgery. A systematic literature review was conducted to identify all relevant studies with comparative data on mitral valve surgery performed during surgery for ALCAPA correction. Predefined primary end points included mortality and mitral valve (re)operation.

Postoperative Outcomes of Fontan Operation in a Multicenter Italian Study. How Far Have We Gone? Early Outcomes After Fontan Operation.

Despite the clinical results of the Fontan operation have certainly improved, it still presents with an inherent surgical risk of death and early morbidities. This is a retrospective clinical study of children undergoing Fontan operation in 9 congenital cardiac centers in Italy between 1990 and 2023. Clinical and surgical data were collected via a dedicated RedCap database.

Objective: The standard surgical treatment of advanced ovarian carcinoma is primary debulking surgery (PDS) aiming to complete cytoreduction. The need to achieve complete cytoreduction has shifted the surgical paradigm to more complex procedures, whose impact on morbidity is controversial. The objective of this retrospective analysis is to explore the impact of extensive PDS on morbidity and oncologic outcomes in a real-world scenario.

A Sensory Shelf-Life Study for the Evaluation of New Eco-Sustainable Packaging of Single-Portion Croissants.

Understanding the correlation between straightforward analytical methods and sensory attributes is pivotal for transitioning to sustainable packaging while improving product quality. In this context, the viability of eco-sustainable packaging alternatives for single-packaged croissants has been investigated through examining the correlations between analytical methods, sensory attributes, employing quantitative descriptive analysis (QDA), and consumer survival analysis. The performance of biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP), a petrochemical plastic film, against paper-based, compostable, and biodegradable films over a 150-day croissant storage period was compared in this study, examining both physiochemical and sensory perspectives.

Drugs for treating infections caused by non-tubercular mycobacteria: a narrative review from the study group on mycobacteria of the Italian Society of Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine.

Background: Non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are generally free-living organism, widely distributed in the environment, with sporadic potential to infect. In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the global incidence of NTM-related disease, spanning across all continents and an increased mortality after the diagnosis has been reported. The decisions on whether to treat or not and which drugs to use are complex and require a multidisciplinary approach as well as patients' involvement in the decision process.

Long-term safety and efficacy of left atrial appendage occlusion in dialysis patients with atrial fibrillation: a multi-center, prospective, open label, observational study.

Background: The prevalence of atrial fibrillation (AF) in end stage kidney disease (ESKD) patients undergoing dialysis is high, however, the high risk of bleeding often hampers with a correct anticoagulation in ESKD patients with AF, despite high thromboembolic risk. Left atrial appendage (LAA) occlusion is a anticoagulation (OAT) for thromboembolism prevention in AF populations with high hemorrhagic risk.

Methods And Results: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of LAA occlusion in a cohort of dialysis patients undergoing the procedure (LAA occlusion cohort,  = 106), in comparison with two other ESKD cohorts, one taking warfarin (Warfarin cohort,  = 114) and the other without anticoagulation therapy (No-OAT cohort,  = 148).

Prevalence and clinical significance of ANCA positivity in lupus nephritis: a case series of 116 patients and literature review.

Unlabelled: The prevalence and clinical significance of anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies [ANCAs] in patients with lupus nephritis [LN] is not fully elucidated. Our aim was to determine whether LN patients with ANCA positivity had different clinicopathological features and outcomes compared to ANCA-negative patients.

Methods: Among our LN patients we retrospectively selected those who underwent ANCA testing the day of the kidney biopsy and before the start of induction treatment.

[Denosumab and fracture risk in kidney transplant].

Kidney transplant patients bear a higher risk of bone disease. The monoclonal antibody Denosumab (Den), by binding RANKL, reduces osteoclastic activity and increases mineral density (BMD), thus limiting the risk of bone fractures. We evaluated the efficacy and safety of Den in kidney transplant patients who developed bone fractures.

Long-term kidney outcome of patients with rheumatological diseases and antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-glomerulonephritis: comparison with a primitive ANCA-glomerulonephritis cohort.

Objectives: Antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA) may appear in the course of rheumatic diseases (RD) but the kidney involvement is very rare and the prognosis poorly defined.

Methods: We retrospectively identified patients with RD among 153 patients with ANCA glomerulonephritis (ANCA-GN). Their clinical/histological presentation and outcome were compared with that of primitive ANCA-GN patients (1:4) matched for sex, age, ANCA type and follow-up.

A Pilot COVID-19 Surveillance Program at the Zendrini Center in Milan (Italy) for Unaccompanied Foreign Minors.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, not only crowded refugee camps and immigration detention centers, but also receptions were places in which outbreaks occurred. To date there has been no report of the application of a COVID-19 surveillance system in reception centers for unaccompanied foreign minors only, who most of all deserve the utmost attention. Aware of this critical issue, we implemented a pilot COVID-19 surveillance program at the Zendrini center in Milan.

Clinical and histological findings at second but not at first kidney biopsy predict end-stage kidney disease in a large multicentric cohort of patients with active lupus nephritis.

Objective: To investigate second kidney biopsy as predictor of end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) in active lupus nephritis (LN).

Methods: Patients with biopsy-proven LN (International Society of Nephrology/Renal Pathology Society 2003) who had undergone a second kidney biopsy between January 1990 and December 2018 were included. Clinical and histological findings at first and at second biopsy were analysed with Cox proportional hazard models to predict ESKD, defined as start of kidney replacement therapy.

Predictors of survival in paediatric mitral valve surgery: the impact of age at operation at late follow-up.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to elucidate predictors of death and reintervention after mitral valve (MV) surgery in children.

Methods: A single-centre retrospective study was performed enrolling 142 patients younger than 18 years who underwent primary index surgical mitral repair or replacement at Bambino Gesù Children's Hospital in Rome from July 1982 to April 2020. Patients with complete, transitional or partial atrioventricular septal defect and patients with single ventricle physiology were excluded.

The incremental value of computed tomography of COVID-19 pneumonia in predicting ICU admission.

Triage is crucial for patient's management and estimation of the required intensive care unit (ICU) beds is fundamental for health systems during the COVID-19 pandemic. We assessed whether chest computed tomography (CT) of COVID-19 pneumonia has an incremental role in predicting patient's admission to ICU. We performed volumetric and texture analysis of the areas of the affected lung in CT of 115 outpatients with COVID-19 infection presenting to the emergency room with dyspnea and unresponsive hypoxyemia.

Increased Creatine Kinase May Predict A Worse COVID-19 Outcome.

Early reports from Asia suggested that increased serum levels of the muscular enzyme creatine-(phospho)-kinase (CK/CPK) could be associated with a more severe prognosis in COVID-19. The aim of this single-center retrospective cohort study of 331 consecutive COVID-19 patients who were hospitalized during Italy's "first wave" was to verify this relationship, and to evaluate the role of possible confounding factors (age, body mass index, gender, and comorbidities). We subdivided our cohort in two groups, based on "severe" ( = 99) or "mild" ( = 232) outcomes.

Introduction: The optimal postoperative adjuvant treatment for stage III endometrial cancer (EC) is controversial. The aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and adjuvant chemoradiotherapy (CRT) on relapse-free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS) in stage III EC.

Methods: Data on 36 patients with stage III EC were reviewed.

Outcome for Conservative Surgery for the Correction of Severe Mitral Valve Regurgitation in Children: A Single-Center Experience.

Evolving reconstructive techniques have progressively become the preferred approach for treatment of pediatric mitral valve regurgitation. We present our experience in a cohort of patients undergoing surgical correction for severe mitral regurgitation. Fifty-five patients (age 1 month-18 years; median 5 years) were included in the present analysis.

Surgical Atrioventricular Valve Replacement With Melody Valve in Infants and Children.

Background Pediatric patients with atrioventricular valve disease have limited options for prosthetic valve replacement in sizes <15 mm. Based on successful experience with the stented bovine jugular vein graft (Melody valve) in the right ventricular outflow tract, the prosthesis has been modified for surgical valve replacement in pediatric patients with atrioventricular dysfunction with the intention of subsequent valve expansion in the catheterization laboratory as the child grows. Methods and Results A multicenter, retrospective cohort study was performed among patients who underwent atrioventricular valve replacement with Melody valve at 17 participating sites from North America and Europe, including 68 patients with either mitral (n=59) or tricuspid (n=9) replacement at a median age of 8 months (range, 3 days to 13 years).
