Schizophrenia is a chronic mental illness, with a prevalence of about 1%. The symptoms are classified in three categories: positive symptoms, negative symptoms and deficits in cognitive function. Regarding the pharmacological treatment, current antipsychotics mainly improve positive symptoms while negative and cognitive symptoms remain inadequately treated.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on how preprocedural physical and mental health impacts outcomes for patients with complex coronary artery disease undergoing either PCI or CABG, using data from the SYNTAXES trial.* -
  • Higher scores in physical and mental health were linked to lower 10-year mortality rates; specifically, a 10-point increase in these scores reduced the risk of death significantly.* -
  • Among patients with good health scores, CABG offered a better survival rate than PCI, while no significant differences in mortality were found for those with lower health scores.*

The European Society of Gynaecological Oncology (ESGO), the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology (ISUOG), the International Ovarian Tumour Analysis (IOTA) group and the European Society for Gynaecological Endoscopy (ESGE) jointly developed clinically relevant and evidence-based statements on the preoperative diagnosis of ovarian tumours, including imaging techniques, biomarkers and prediction models. ESGO/ISUOG/IOTA/ESGE nominated a multidisciplinary international group, including expert practising clinicians and researchers who have demonstrated leadership and expertise in the preoperative diagnosis of ovarian tumours and management of patients with ovarian cancer (19 experts across Europe). A patient representative was also included in the group.

Within the past few years, poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitors (PARPi) have been added to the standard of care for cancer patients, mainly for those exhibiting specific genomic alterations in the homologous recombination (HR) pathway. Until now, patients who are eligible to receive PARPi have been identified using next-generation sequencing (NGS) of gene panels. However, NGS analyses do have some limitations, with a subset of patients with negative NGS-based results can exhibit a clinical benefit, responding positively to PARPi, despite the failure to detect dynamic and predictive biomarkers such as mutated BRCA1/2 genes.

Background: Chronic cough is a distressing symptom for many people with pulmonary sarcoidosis. Continuous treatment with a macrolide antibiotic may improve cough. We aimed to assess the potential efficacy of azithromycin in patients with sarcoidosis and self-reported cough.

The age-standardised incidence of cervical cancer in Europe varies widely by country (between 3 and 25/100000 women-years) in 2018. Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine coverage is low in countries with the highest incidence and screening performance is heterogeneous among European countries. A broad group of delegates of scientific professional societies and cancer organisations endorse the principles of the WHO call to eliminate cervical cancer as a public health problem, also in Europe.

Background: The causal link between elevated systemic inflammation biomarkers and poor survival has been demonstrated in cancer patients. However, the evidence for this correlation in endometrial cancer (EC) is too weak to influence current criteria of risk assessment. Here, we examined the role of inflammatory indicators as a tool to identify EC patients at higher risk of death in a retrospective observational study.

Background: Experimental and clinical evidence suggests that cyclosporine may attenuate reperfusion injury and reduce myocardial infarct size. We aimed to test whether cyclosporine would improve clinical outcomes and prevent adverse left ventricular remodeling.

Methods: In a multicenter, double-blind, randomized trial, we assigned 970 patients with an acute anterior ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) who were undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) within 12 hours after symptom onset and who had complete occlusion of the culprit coronary artery to receive a bolus injection of cyclosporine (administered intravenously at a dose of 2.
