Receptor-informed network control theory links LSD and psilocybin to a flattening of the brain's control energy landscape.

Psychedelics including lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) and psilocybin temporarily alter subjective experience through their neurochemical effects. Serotonin 2a (5-HT2a) receptor agonism by these compounds is associated with more diverse (entropic) brain activity. We postulate that this increase in entropy may arise in part from a flattening of the brain's control energy landscape, which can be observed using network control theory to quantify the energy required to transition between recurrent brain states.

Precision measurement of the B → Xs γ photon energy spectrum, branching fraction, and direct CP asymmetry A(CP)((B → X(s+d)γ).

The photon spectrum in the inclusive electromagnetic radiative decays of the B meson, B → X(s)γ plus B → X(d)γ, is studied using a data sample of (382.8 ± 4.2) × 10(6)Υ(4S) → BB decays collected by the BABAR experiment at SLAC.

FOXO1 mediates the autocrine effect of endothelin-1 on endothelial cell survival.

Chronic hyperglycemia exerts a deleterious effect on endothelium, contributing to endothelial dysfunction and microvascular complications in poorly controlled diabetes. To understand the underlying mechanism, we studied the effect of endothelin-1 (ET-1) on endothelial production of Forkhead box O1 (FOXO1), a forkhead transcription factor that plays an important role in cell survival. ET-1 is a 21-amino acid peptide that is secreted primarily from endothelium.

C-peptide reduces pro-inflammatory cytokine secretion in LPS-stimulated U937 monocytes in condition of hyperglycemia.

Objective: We investigated C-peptide effects on inflammatory cytokine release and adhesion of monocytes exposed to high glucose and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in vitro.

Materials And Methods: Monocytic cells (U-937) were cultured in the presence of 30 mmol/L glucose and stimulated with 0.5 ng/μL LPS in the presence or absence of C-peptide (1 μmol/L) for 24 h to induce inflammatory cytokine secretion.

C-peptide reduces high-glucose-induced apoptosis of endothelial cells and decreases NAD(P)H-oxidase reactive oxygen species generation in human aortic endothelial cells.

Aims/hypothesis: Reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated during hyperglycaemia are implicated in the development of diabetic vascular complications. High glucose increases oxidative stress in endothelial cells and induces apoptosis. A major source of ROS in endothelial cells exposed to glucose is the NAD(P)H oxidase enzyme.

Prevalence, distribution and correlates of endocervical human papillomavirus types in Brazilian women.

We determined the prevalence, distribution and correlates of human papillomavirus (HPV) types in 386 mixed-income, sexually active women in São Paulo, Brazil. Endocervical samples were tested for HPV DNA with L1 primers MY09 and MY11; negative and indeterminate samples were retested using GP 5+/6+ consensus primers. HPV was detected in 35% of all women; high-risk/probable high-risk types in 20%; low-risk types in 7%; and an indeterminate type in 10%.

C-peptide is internalised in human endothelial and vascular smooth muscle cells via early endosomes.

Aims/hypothesis: There is increasing evidence that C-peptide exerts intracellular effects in a variety of cells and could be beneficial in patients with type 1 diabetes. Exactly how C-peptide achieves these effects, however, is unknown. Recent reports showed that C-peptide internalised in the cytoplasm of HEK-293 and Swiss 3T3 cells, where it was not degraded for at least 1 h after uptake.

Partner-delivered medication for sexually transmitted infections: findings from Brazil.

Background: Notifying and treating sexual partners of women or men diagnosed with a sexually transmitted infection (STI) is imperative to reducing STI transmission.

Methods: As part of a study to examine the introduction of home-based STI testing and rapid-point-of-care diagnostics in a low income population of women in São Paulo, Brazil, we offered 108 women diagnosed with an STI the opportunity to contact partner(s) herself have a clinician contact partner(s) or provide her with medication for partner(s).

Results: Offering partner-delivered medication to women with gonorrhea, chlamydia and/or trichomoniasis, in addition to the standard referral strategies, resulted in high rates of partner treatment, with 80 percent of reported male partners and 96 percent of notified male partners treated.

Measurements of partial branching fractions for B-->Xulnu and determination of |Vub|.

We present partial branching fractions for inclusive charmless semileptonic B decays B[over ]-->X_{u}lnu[over ], and the determination of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element |V_{ub}|. The analysis is based on a sample of 383 x 10;{6} Upsilon(4S) decays into BB[over ] pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the SLAC PEP-II e;{+}e;{-} storage rings. We select events using the invariant mass M_{X} of the hadronic system, the invariant mass squared, q;{2}, of the lepton and neutrino pair, the kinematic variable P+, or one of their combinations.

Measurement of the branching fractions of exclusive _B-->D(*)(pi)l-_nu l decays in events with a fully reconstructed B meson.

We report a measurement of the branching fractions for _B-->D(*)(pi)l- _nu(l) decays based on 341.1 fb(-1) of data collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at the SLAC PEP-II e+ e- storage rings. Events are tagged by fully reconstructing one of the B mesons in a hadronic decay mode.

Search for CPT and lorentz violation in B0-B[over ]0 oscillations with dilepton events.

We report results of a search for CPT and Lorentz violation in B(0)-B[over ](0) oscillations using inclusive dilepton events from 232 x 10(6) Upsilon(4S)-->BB[over ] decays recorded by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II B Factory at SLAC. We find 2.8sigma significance, compatible with no signal, for variations in the complex CPT violation parameter z at the Earth's sidereal frequency and extract values for the quantities Deltaa(micro) in the general Lorentz-violating standard-model extension.

Human C-peptide antagonises high glucose-induced endothelial dysfunction through the nuclear factor-kappaB pathway.

Aims/hypothesis: Endothelial dysfunction in diabetes is predominantly caused by hyperglycaemia leading to vascular complications through overproduction of oxidative stress and activation of the transcription factor nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-kappaB). Many studies have suggested that decreased circulating levels of C-peptide may play a role in diabetic vascular dysfunction. To date, the possible effects of C-peptide on endothelial cells and intracellular signalling pathways are largely unknown.

Human proinsulin C-peptide reduces high glucose-induced proliferation and NF-kappaB activation in vascular smooth muscle cells.

Excessive proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) is one of the primary lesions in atherosclerosis development during diabetes. High glucose triggers VSMC proliferation and initiates activation of the transcription factor nuclear factor (NF)-kappaB. Recently, clinical studies have demonstrated that replacement therapy with C-peptide, a cleavage product of insulin, to type 1 diabetic (T1D) patients is beneficial on a variety of diabetes-associated vascular complications.

Measurement of the Time-Dependent CP Asymmetry in B;{0}-->D_{CP};{(*)}h;{0} Decays.

We report a measurement of the time-dependent CP-asymmetry parameters S and C in color-suppressed B{0}-->D{(*)0}h{0} decays, where h{0} is a pi{0}, eta, or omega meson, and the decays to one of the CP eigenstates K+K-, K{S}{0}pi{0}, or K{S}{0}omega. The data sample consists of 383 x 10{6} Upsilon(4S)-->BB decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B factory at SLAC. The results are S=-0.

Measurements of CP-violating asymmetries in B0-->a1+/-(1260)pi-/+ decays.

We present measurements of CP-violating asymmetries in the decay B(0)-->a(1)(+/-)(1260)pi(-/+) with a(1)(+/-)(1260)-->pi(-/+)pi(+/-)pi(+/-). The data sample corresponds to 384x10(6) BB[over ] pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric B factory at SLAC. We measure the CP-violating asymmetry A(CP)(a(1)pi)=-0.

Branching fraction measurements of B+-->rho+gamma, B0-->rho0gamma, and B0-->omegagamma.

We present a study of the decays B+-->rho+gamma, B0-->rho0gamma, and B0-->omegagamma. The analysis is based on data containing 347 x 10(6) BB[over ] events recorded with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric B factory. We measure the branching fractions B(B+-->rho+)gamma)=(1.

Evidence for B(0) --> rho(0)rho(0) decays and implications for the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa angle alpha.

We search for the decays B(0) --> rho(0)rho(0), B(0) --> rho(0)f(0)(980), and B(0) --> f(0)(980)f(0)(980) in a sample of about 384 x 10(6) Upsilon(4S) --> BB[over] decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e(+)e(-) collider at Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. We find evidence for B(0) --> rho(0)rho(0) with 3.5 sigma significance and measure the branching fraction B = (1.

Observation of an excited charm baryon Omega c* decaying to Omega c0gamma.

We report the first observation of an excited singly charmed baryon Omega c* (css) in the radiative decay Omega c0gamma, where the Omega c0 baryon is reconstructed in the decays to the final states Omega(-)pi+, Omega(-)pi+pi0, Omega(-)pi+pi(-)pi+, and Xi(-)K(-)pi+pi+. This analysis is performed using a data set of 230.7 fb(-1) collected by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B factory at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center.

Home-based self-sampling and self-testing for sexually transmitted infections: acceptable and feasible alternatives to provider-based screening in low-income women in São Paulo, Brazil.

Objective: The objective of this study was to determine whether home-based screening for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) is acceptable, feasible, and increases the proportion of women screened among low-income women in São Paulo, Brazil.

Study Design: Eight hundred eighteen women were randomized to receive a clinic appointment or a kit for home-based STI self-collection and testing. All participants collected 2 vaginal swabs, one for polymerase chain reaction detection of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and trichomoniasis and another for a self-conducted rapid test for trichomoniasis.

CD11b Expression on circulating leukocytes increases in preparation for parturition.

Problem: Initiation of parturition is associated with migration of leukocytes to the reproductive tract. This migration is controlled in part by expression of adhesion molecules on the surface of leukocytes and vascular endothelial cells. Within the reproductive tract, certain endothelial adhesion molecules, including intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), are up-regulated at the end of gestation.

Monocytes are progressively activated in the circulation of pregnant women.

Pregnancy is characterized by the presence of generalized leukocyte activation. We used flow cytometry to investigate changes in phenotype and intracellular cytokines of circulating granulocytes, monocytes, and T lymphocytes of pregnant women during gestation. We report that peripheral circulation of pregnancy is characterized by an increased percentage of granulocytes and a decrease in lymphocytes.

Normal pregnancy is associated with peripheral leukocyte activation.

Problem: Normal pregnancy has been described as both a pro-inflammatory condition and a T helper (Th)2-dominated state. Deviations in the percentage of different subpopulations of circulating leukocytes have been detected, although with conflicting results. This study was designed to analyse further the phenotype of subpopulations of peripheral blood leukocytes in normal pregnant women.

Molecular basis of evolutionary loss of the alpha 1,3-galactosyltransferase gene in higher primates.

Galactose-alpha1,3-galactose (alphaGal) epitopes, the synthesis of which requires the enzyme product of alpha1,3-galactosyltransferase (alpha1,3GT), are sugar chains on the cell surface of most mammalian species. Notable exceptions are higher primates including Old World monkeys, apes, and humans. The alphaGal-negative species as well as mice with deletion of the alpha1,3GT gene produce abundant anti-alphaGal antibodies.

Restricted TCR V beta gene expression and enterovirus infection in type I diabetes: a pilot study.

Aims/hypothesis: High frequencies of T-cell receptor (TCR) V beta 7+ T cells were detected among the lymphocytes isolated from pancreatic islets of children at the onset of Type I (insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus. We assessed whether a preferential expression of certain TCR V beta gene families could also be detected among the peripheral blood mononuclear cells from diabetic patients.

Methods: T-cell receptor repertoires were evaluated by using a semi-quantitative RT-PCR-based technique and confirmed by FACS analysis in peripheral blood mononuclear cells from diabetic patients before, at and after onset of the disease.
