Article Synopsis
  • The study reviews the use of liquid ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) copolymer for preoperative portal vein embolization (PVE) in patients with liver cancer, focusing on its effectiveness in enhancing future liver remnant (FLR) size before surgery.
  • Twenty-six patients underwent PVE, achieving a 100% success rate in targeting the intended portal veins and resulting in a significant increase in FLR volume (52.9% increase on average) within 3-6 weeks post-procedure.
  • The procedure demonstrated good safety, with minor complications in four patients, and a high subsequent liver resection rate of 84.5%, indicating EVOH's feasibility and effectiveness for FLR

We compared very elderly people taking vitamin K antagonists (VKA) and those not taking VKA (noVKA). Individuals were included in the noVKA group if there was no VKA on their reimbursed prescriptions during the study period. We also compared three subgroups, constituted by VKA type (fluindione, warfarin, or acenocoumarol).

Platelet aggregation inhibitors (PAI) have widely proven their efficiency for the prevention of ischemic cardiovascular events. We aimed to describe PAI prescription in an elderly multimorbid population and to determine the factors that influence their prescription, including the impact of age, comorbidities and frailty, evaluated through a comprehensive geriatric assessment. This cross-sectional study included all patients admitted to the acute geriatric department of a university hospital from November 2016 to January 2017.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on the impact of an ambulatory physical activity program (APAP) on retirees with age-related motor skills issues.
  • Participants (200 retirees, average age 73.8) showed significant improvements in timed mobility, gait speed, and balance after 12 weeks of the program.
  • The findings suggest that engaging in regular physical activity can enhance motor performance and quality of life for older adults, highlighting the importance of preventive measures against postural and gait disorders.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on elderly individuals (over 75) using direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) versus those not using them to understand differences in health and medication use.
  • It analyzed a sample of 19,798 patients, finding that those on DOACs had higher rates of chronic diseases and were prescribed more medications compared to those not on DOACs.
  • Routine laboratory monitoring of patients on DOACs was found to be inadequate, raising concerns about their health management in this age group.
