Background: Several techniques exist for performing targeted axillary dissection (TAD) after neoadjuvant chemotherapy with the removal of the sentinel node and a marked metastatic lymph node (LN). Two-step methods include coil-marking of the metastatic LN at diagnosis and re-marking with an intraoperatively identifiable marker before surgery. Because nondetection of the marked lymph node (MLN) warrants axillary clearance and many patients achieve axillary pathological complete response (ax-pCR), the success of TAD is crucial.

Introduction: Circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) exhibit remarkable stability and may serve as biomarkers in several clinical cancer settings. The aim of this study was to investigate changes in the levels of specific circulating miRNA following breast cancer surgery and evaluate whether these alterations were also observed in an independent data set.

Methods: Global miRNA analysis was performed on prospectively collected serum samples from 24 post-menopausal women with estrogen receptor-positive early-stage breast cancer before surgery and 3 weeks after tumor resection using global LNA-based quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR).

The effect of the repetition and contact times on the intensity of the magic-angle spinning (MAS) spectra of pyrene has been studied. Pyrene, like a great number of fused polyaromatic compounds, has a very large 13C longitudinal relaxation time (T1Z). When using the cross-polarization (CP) MAS technique, the optimum repetition time is 800 s.

Bologna-type sausages were manufactured using standard industry processes and four different formulations: (a) standard commercial formulation (control), (b) with 2% sodium lactate, (c) with 2% lactate and 0.25% glucono-delta-lactone (GDL), (d) with 2% lactate and 0.5% GDL.

The influence of the amount of mechanically deboned pork meat (MDM) on the quality of model 'Frankfurters' was studied, and the relationship between the pH of the blends versus the texture and water-holding capacity (WHC) of the finished products was investigated. In the experiments 2·9%, 5·8% and 11·6% pork loin were exchanged with MDM. It was found that addition of MDM increased the pH and the WHC, and that moderate addition of MDM resulted in greater yield stress and elasticity modulus, while higher concentrations of MDM resulted in very soft texture.
