A comprehensive digestive approach for determining the extractable and leachable metals in pharmaceutical products by inductively-coupled plasma is investigated. This study examines several acid digestion strategies for packaging materials, containers, and formulated products for complete trace metals analysis. Packaging materials, a food product, and a simulated drug product are evaluated for leachable metals by stressing the materials under accelerated stability conditions.

Necessity of the Honan intraocular pressure reducer in cataract surgery using topical anesthesia.

Purpose: To assess the use of the Honan intraocular pressure reducer (HIPR) for clear corneal cataract surgery using topical anesthesia.

Setting: University of North Carolina Hospitals Ambulatory Care Clinic outpatient operating rooms.

Methods: Of 51 consecutive candidates for surgery (excluding those with uncontrolled glaucoma), 26 were randomly assigned to wear the HIPR (Honan group) for 10 minutes before surgery.

Conservative management of electrical burn injury of ureter secondary to laparoscopy.

We report on a patient with electrical burn injury of the left ureter secondary to laparoscopy. She was treated conservatively. Despite the large number of laparoscopic procedures performed, only a few cases of ureteral injury have been reported in the English literature.

Occult bleeding from a perforated gastric duplication in an infant.

We report what we believe is the first case of a perforated gastric duplication with occult intraperitoneal hemorrhage and massive abdominal distention in the neonatal period. At operation, a perforated ulcer on the free anterior surface of the duplication was identified and the entire cyst excised by submucosal dissection.

Lipogranulomatosis of the genitalia caused by topical application of "baby oil".

A case is reported of lipogranulomatosis of the genitalia caused by topical application of "baby oil". To our knowledge this is the first such case reported in the English literature. The chemical nature of the lipid in question was analyzed by sophisticated procedures, including gas liquid chromatography, thin layer chromatography and mass spectrometry.
