Assessing the effect of different operation techniques on postoperative duplex ultrasound quality after carotid endarterectomy.

Background: Duplex ultrasound is the first choice in diagnostics and surveillance of stenoses of the internal carotid arteries before and even after surgery. Therefore, the quality of duplex ultrasound is crucial to investigate these vascular pathologies.

Objective: Aim of this study was the evaluation whether different surgical techniques affect the postoperative quality of duplex ultrasound.

The Propargyl Rearrangement to Functionalised Allyl-Boron and Borocation Compounds.

A diverse range of Lewis acidic alkyl, vinyl and aryl boranes and borenium compounds that are capable of new carbon-carbon bond formation through selective migratory group transfer have been synthesised. Utilising a series of heteroleptic boranes [PhB(C6 F5 )2 (1), PhCH2 CH2 B(C6 F5 )2 (2), and E-B(C6 F5 )2 (C6 F5 )C=C(I)R (R=Ph 3 a, nBu 3 b)] and borenium cations [phenylquinolatoborenium cation ([QOBPh][AlCl4 ], 4)], it has been shown that these boron-based compounds are capable of producing novel allyl- boron and boronium compounds through complex rearrangement reactions with various propargyl esters and carbamates. These reactions yield highly functionalised, synthetically useful boron substituted organic compounds with substantial molecular complexity in a one-pot reaction.

Elimination of large uremic toxins by a dialyzer specifically designed for high-volume convective therapies.

Background: Unlike conventional hemodialysis treatments, which rely almost solely on diffusion-related mechanisms for solute removal, hemodiafiltration (HDF) allows more efficient removal of higher molecular weight toxins due to convective transport mechanisms. To facilitate the removal of these toxins in HDF treatment modalities, dialyzers with highly efficient high-flux membranes are necessary. This study assessed the large uremic toxin removal ability of a high-flux dialyzer (FX CorDiax 60) specifically designed to facilitate convective therapies compared with a standard high-flux dialyzer (FX 60).

Celiac disease and the transition from childhood to adulthood: a 28-year follow-up.

Objectives: Follow-up of celiac disease diagnosed in childhood is variable or nonexistent after transition to adulthood. Outcome, continuity of care, and adherence to a gluten-free diet are poorly documented. We report a 28-yr follow-up of 50 adults in whom the original childhood diagnosis could be confirmed.

Evaluation of the performance of a wrist blood pressure measuring device with a position sensor compared to ambulatory 24-hour blood pressure measurements.

This randomized, single-center, open, within-subject study evaluated the performance of the Braun PrecisionSensor 2000 blood pressure (BP) measurement wrist device (BP 2000, Braun GmbH, Germany) with and without the position sensor, and compared the results with data obtained from 24-h ambulatory BP measurement (ABPM, A&D TM 2430). In a crossover design, 43 subjects performed BP measurements with the BP 2000 during two 7-day periods, one with the position sensor and the other without the position sensor.
