Background: Swine dysentery, caused by Brachyspira hyodysenteriae, is a severe pig disease. Resistance to tylosins is common and resistance to tiamulin has been reported since the 1990s. Still, dysentery is not notifiable to authorities.

An mNGS proficiency test (PT) was performed in six European veterinary and public health laboratories to detect porcine astroviruses in fecal material and the extracted RNA. While different mNGS workflows for the generation of mNGS data were used in the different laboratories, the bioinformatic analysis was standardized using a metagenomic read classifier as well as read mapping to selected astroviral reference genomes to assess the semiquantitative representation of astrovirus species mixtures.

Results: During eleven years preceding the trial, the annual incidence of tail injuries registered at slaughter in pigs from the herd increased from 3% (equivalent to the national mean) to 10%.
Background: Dermatophytosis (ringworm) caused by members of the Trichophyton mentagrophytes complex is rarely diagnosed in pigs but has been recognized as an increasingly common infection in humans. Further, resistance to antifungal drugs have been reported both in Asia and in Europe. This is the first scientific report of infection by the T.
