Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) is an indoleamine synthesized in vertebrates mainly in the pineal gland, and is known to be involved mainly in thermoregulation and control of the circadian rhythm. That indoleamine can affect the auto-, para- and endocrine pathways, regulating body functions and affecting the metabolism of animals and humans. In addition to the pineal gland, melatonin can be synthesized in many extra-pineal tissues, mainly in the gastrointestinal tract.

In vitro culture Muller cell model to study the role of inverted internal limiting membrane flap technique in macular hole closure.

Inverted internal limiting membrane (ILM) flap may constitute a scaffold for Muller cells whose migration and proliferation on its surface begin the process of macular hole closure. The goal of the study was to establish an in vitro model of the interaction between ILM and the Muller cells. Vitrectomy with inverted ILM flap was performed in 23 patients due to a full-thickness macular hole (FTMH).

Expression of Alternative Splice Variants of 6-Phosphofructo-2-kinase/Fructose-2,6-bisphosphatase-4 in Normoxic and Hypoxic Melanoma Cells.

Cancer-specific isoenzyme of phosphofructokinase II (), as our previous research has shown, may be one of the most important enzymes contributing to the intensification of glycolysis in hypoxic malignant melanoma cells. Although the gene seems to play a crucial role in the progression of melanoma, so far there are no complete data on the expression of at the isoform level and the influence of hypoxia on alternative splicing. Using RT-qPCR and semi-quantitative RT-PCR, we presented the gene expression profile at the level of six isoforms described in the OMIM NCBI database in normoxic and hypoxic melanoma cells.

Characteristics of oxygen concentration and the role of correction factor in real-time GI breath test.

Objective: A high quality end-expiratory breath sample is required for a reliable gastrointestinal breath test result. Oxygen (O) concentration in the breath sample can be used as a quality marker. This study investigated the characteristics of O concentration in the breath sample and the impact of using a correction factor in real-time breath measurement.
