The electrophysiological effects of phencyclidine (PCP) were measured intracellularly in guinea pig hippocampal CA1 neurons in vitro. At all doses tested (0.2 microM - 10 mM), PCP increased the width of action potentials (APs).

The dose-dependent effects of phencyclidine were examined in guinea pig hippocampal slices using intracellular and extracellular recordings. Orthodromically evoked population potentials from the CA1 cell body layer were enhanced by low doses (0.2-0.

Application of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) to the dendrites of CA1 pyramidal cells in hippocampal slices produced depolarizing and hyperpolarizing responses. Picrotoxin (50 microM) blocked the depolarizing response of the dendrites to GABA but not the hyperpolarizing responses of the dendrites. The hyperpolarizing response of the cell body to GABA was reduced but not blocked by picrotoxin, suggesting the presence of a complex response at the cell body.

The effects of (-) trans-delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and its metabolite cannabidiol (CBD) were investigated on evoked responses in the CA1 and dentate gyrus regions of the guinea pig transverse hippocampal slice. In both areas orthodromically evoked responses were enhanced by 10(-7) M THC, while 10(-6) M THC caused depression. Antidromic responses were not significantly affected.

The effects of ethanol (10, 20, 50, and 100 mM) have been studied on field potentials in the CA1 region of the in vitro hippocampal slice preparation. Ethanol produced depression of the orthodromically evoked CA1 population spike and raised the threshold for orthodromic spike production. The effects of ethanol on the size of the population spike were highly correlated with the amount of the inhibition present in the slice as measure by paired pulse stimulation in control medium.
