Background: Operative management of chronic Achilles tendinopathy with large defects can be surgically challenging. Concerns exist regarding transosseous transfer of the flexor hallucis longus (FHL) tendon because of the shortened lever arm of flexion and weakening of the big toe. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the 2-year outcome of transosseous FHL transfer for the treatment of large Achilles tendon defects.

Article Synopsis
  • Haglund exostosis-related heel pain can be treated with dorsal closing wedge calcaneal osteotomy (DCWCO), which has shown promising clinical outcomes in recent studies.
  • A study involving 15 patients measured ankle muscle strength and gait function before and a year after surgery, finding minor differences in strength between limbs and improving gait dynamics.
  • Post-surgery, patients reported a 48% improvement in foot function, with 80% feeling significantly benefited by the procedure, suggesting effective long-term results from the surgery.

Traumatic lateral dislocations of the first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint are very rare. A 44-year-old male was referred after a motorcycle to car accident because of an exposed head of the left first metatarsal through a laceration on the medial aspect of the first MTP joint. Radiographs showed a lateral dislocation of the first MTP joint, with concomitant fractures of the neck of the second metatarsal and the base of the third and fourth metatarsal bones.
