Background And Aims: Chronic hepatitis D infection is the most severe form of viral hepatitis and can rapidly progress to cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinoma. Despite recommendations for systematic screening of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)-positive individuals, data from real-world studies have reported a low frequency of hepatitis D (or delta) virus (HDV) screening. Our cross-sectional analysis evaluated the diagnostic cascade for hepatitis D infection in tertiary centres and described the characteristics of HDV-positive patients.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted in two nursing homes in southwestern France to investigate COVID-19 breakthrough infections among residents who were mostly vaccinated, during active COVID-19 clusters in early 2021.
  • Out of 152 residents, 31% had confirmed COVID-19 infections, including those who were fully vaccinated, with some experiencing severe illness and one fatality.
  • The study found that infected residents had significantly higher antibody levels compared to non-infected vaccinated residents, suggesting that additional vaccine doses may be beneficial for this vulnerable population.

Clinical and laboratory predictors of COVID-19 severity are now well described and combined to propose mortality or severity scores. However, they all necessitate saturable equipment such as scanners, or procedures difficult to implement such as blood gas measures. To provide an easy and fast COVID-19 severity risk score upon hospital admission, and keeping in mind the above limits, we sought for a scoring system needing limited invasive data such as a simple blood test and co-morbidity assessment by anamnesis.

We investigated the seroprevalence and incidence of hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection in men who have sex with men (MSM) who have been exposed to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) against HIV as sexual transmission of HEV has been suggested. A total of 147 PrEP-using MSM and 147 blood donors matched for sex, age and geographical area were tested for anti-HEV IgG and IgM. Among them, 135 have been followed for 1 year, at the end of which serological tests for HEV were performed retrospectively on stored samples.
