The study evaluates the effectiveness of aged refuse bioreactors (ARBs) in treating young landfill leachate and recovering energy through biogas production. Over 90 days, duplicate reactors (ARB1 and ARB2) were operated through three 30-day recirculation cycles under anaerobic conditions, utilizing aged refuse from a closed landfill in Bangalore, India. The study was extended by an additional 900 days without further leachate addition to assess long-term gas generation potential.

Landfill leachate raises a huge risk to human health and the environment as it contains a high concentration of organic and inorganic contaminants, heavy metals, ammonia, and refractory substances. Among leachate treatment techniques, the biological methods are more environmentally benign and less expensive than the physical-chemical treatment methods. The study aims to investigate the application of anaerobic (AN), aerobic (AER) and semi-aerobic (SA) laboratory scale landfill bioreactors for stabilization of mechanically and biologically treated (MBT) waste of Bangalore city. All major parameters pertaining to the waste, leachate and biogas are continuously monitored during the experiment. The performance of an anaerobic bioreactor in treating mechanically biologically treated municipal solid waste was investigated using experimental and modelling techniques. The key parameters measured during the experimental test period included the gas yield, leachate generation and settlement under applied load. N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) is a man-made compound that is widely used as a solvent for the synthesis of various organic compounds. In this study, a bacterial strain Paracoccus sp. DMF capable of using DMF as the sole carbon, nitrogen and energy source, was isolated from an enrichment culture developed using activated sludge from domestic waste water treatment unit as the source inoculum.
