Background: Elevated plasma asymmetric and symmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA and SDMA) are risk factors for chronic kidney disease (CKD) and cardiovascular disease. Using plasma cystatin C (pCYSC)-based estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) trajectories, we identified a cohort at high risk of poor kidney-related health outcomes amongst members of the Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Study (DMHDS). We therefore examined associations between methylarginine metabolites and kidney function in this cohort.

Introduction: Evaluating groin pain still evades many clinicians at times as they have difficulty determining the cause of pain when no true hernia exists. This study's aim was to evaluate a simple and novel scoring system which is reproducible, to help determine whether conservative measures or surgery is recommended for the management of groin pain attributable to inguinal disruption.

Material & Methods: A retrospective analysis of all patients from 2018 to 2020 that underwent surgery or conservative management for inguinal disruption with at least a 1-year follow-up were evaluated.

Acetaminophen (APAP) is commonly taken in overdose and can cause acute liver injury via the toxic metabolite NAPQI formed by cytochrome (CYP) P450 pathway. We aimed to evaluate the concentrations of APAP metabolites on presentation following an acute APAP poisoning and whether these predicted the subsequent onset of hepatotoxicity (peak alanine aminotransferase > 1,000 U/L). The Australian Toxicology Monitoring (ATOM) study is a prospective observational study, recruiting via two poison information centers and four toxicology units.

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic is a global public health emergency. Lockdown restrictions and the reconfiguration of healthcare systems to accommodate an increase in critical care capacity have had an impact on 'non-COVID' specialties. This study characterises the utilisation of emergency general surgery (EGS) services during the UK lockdown period at a university teaching hospital with a catchment population that represents one of the most deprived and ethnically diverse areas in the UK.

Article Synopsis
  • * A case study of a 43-year-old woman showed that despite her acetaminophen level being initially below the nomogram line, she developed severe liver failure due to delayed absorption caused by medications that slow gastric emptying, including clonidine.
  • * The case emphasizes the potential risks of coingesting drugs that affect gastric emptying, as they can alter the pharmacokinetics of acetaminophen and lead to unexpected toxicity.
