Extracellular vesicles (EVs), whose main subtypes are exosomes, microparticles, and apoptotic bodies, are secreted by all cells and harbor biomolecules such as DNA, RNA, and proteins. They function as intercellular messengers and, depending on their cargo, may have multiple roles in cancer development. Thymidine kinase 1 (TK1) is a cell cycle-dependent enzyme used as a biomarker for cell proliferation.

Therefore, a one-step homogeneous assay for real-time determination of TK1 and dCK was developed by combining enzyme complementation with fluorescent signal generation using primer extension and a quenched probe oligodeoxyribonucleotide system at 37 °C. Complementation, for producing dCTP and TTP from nucleoside substrates, was carried out by dTMP kinase and/or UMP/CMP kinase and nucleoside diphosphate kinase.

We have combined this technology with capillary gel electrophoresis in a multicapillary format, using liquid core waveguide (LCW) fluorescence detection. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of multiple DNA targets is performed with one primer for each target biotinylated.

A previous study on insects has shown that such gifts may arise as a sensory trap that exploits a female's underlying motivation to feed. Here I present independent evidence of a sensory trap in spiders.

A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay was developed for detection of pathogenic, virulent strains of Yersinia enterocolitica. By using both virulence loci virF and ail as markers for pathogenicity, detection of species with a virulence factor present was possible. DNA preparation in the presence of hexadecyl trimethy ammonium bromide (CTAB) was followed by two 44 cycle amplification reactions, one for each of the markers.
