Nociception level index: do intra-operative values allow the prediction of acute postoperative pain?

Nociception Level Index (NOL) guided analgesia has previously been found to correlate with noxious stimuli during surgery. It was aim of this study to investigate the relationship between intra-operative NOL and acute postoperative pain. After IRB approval, 80 patients scheduled for non-emergency surgery were enrolled.

Noncanonical translation via deadenylated 3' UTRs maintains primordial germ cells.

Primordial germ cells (PGCs) form during early embryogenesis with a supply of maternal mRNAs that contain shorter poly(A) tails. How translation of maternal mRNAs is regulated during PGC development remains elusive. Here we describe a small-molecule screen with zebrafish embryos that identified primordazine, a compound that selectively ablates PGCs.

Insulin-like growth factor receptor 1b is required for zebrafish primordial germ cell migration and survival.

Insulin-like growth factor (IGF) signaling is a critical regulator of somatic growth during fetal and adult development, primarily through its stimulatory effects on cell proliferation and survival. IGF signaling is also required for development of the reproductive system, although its precise role in this regard remains unclear. We have hypothesized that IGF signaling is required for embryonic germline development, which requires the specification and proliferation of primordial germ cells (PGCs) in an extragonadal location, followed by directed migration to the genital ridges.

Insulin-like growth factor signaling regulates zebrafish embryonic growth and development by promoting cell survival and cell cycle progression.

Although much is known about the global effects of insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor (IGF1R)-mediated signaling on fetal growth and the clinical manifestations resulting from IGF/IGF1R deficiencies, we have an incomplete understanding of the cellular actions of this essential pathway during vertebrate embryogenesis. In this study, we inhibited IGF1R signaling during zebrafish embryogenesis using antisense morpholino oligonucleotides or a dominant-negative IGF1R fusion protein. IGF1R inhibition resulted in reduced embryonic growth, arrested development and increased lethality.
