Article Synopsis
  • The study assessed major lower limb amputation rates in Southern Finland over 17 years, revealing an incidence of 154 amputations per million people in 2000.
  • The majority of amputations were due to chronic critical lower limb ischemia (71.8%), with a significant decrease in amputation rates (41% overall) from 1984 to 2000.
  • The findings suggest that improvements in vascular surgery are linked to reduced amputation rates, particularly below-knee amputations, leading to a relative increase in above-knee amputations.
