Background: Benzodiazepines can exacerbate opioid-induced respiratory depression by furthering the decrease in central respiratory drive and causing loss of upper airway patency potentially leading to airway obstruction. This study aimed to determine if co-administration of benzodiazepines and opioids significantly decreases hypercapnic ventilation compared with opioids alone.
Methods: We conducted a randomised, double-blind, four-period crossover trial in 20 healthy participants to assess whether i.
Aim: Pediatric endoscopic pilonidal sinus treatment (PEPSiT) has favorable short-term-outcomes, but there is a lack of reliable data on medium and long-term follow-up. The objective of our study was to evaluate the effectiveness and advantages of PEPSiT versus conventional surgery of pilonidal sinus in the pediatric population.
Methods: A quasi-experimental study was carried out in pediatric patients undergoing pilonidal sinus surgery at a single institution from 2019 to 2022.
Purpose: High-pressure balloon dilatation (HPBD) of the ureterovesical junction with double-J stenting is a minimally invasive alternative to ureteral reimplantation or cutaneous ureterostomy for first-line surgical treatment of primary obstructive megaureter (POM). The aim of our study was to identify the risk factors associated with the need for secondary procedures due to HPBD failure.
Methods: Prospective data were collected from patients who underwent HPBD for POM between 2007 and 2021 at a single institution.
Background: The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic resulted in shortages of supplies, which limited the use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support. As a contingency strategy, polypropylene (PP) oxygenation membranes were used. This study describes the clinical outcomes in patients on ECMO with PP compared to poly-methylpentene (PMP) oxygenation membranes.
