Awareness and practice of appropriate treatment for childhood sickle cell disease (SCD) has improved, and survival rates have increased significantly. Today, most patients will eventually require treatment in the adult-care setting. Adolescents who are transferred out from successful pediatric programs face numerous challenges regarding continuity of care, and mortality rates remain high in this age group.

There is conflicting evidence in the literature on the etiology of hypogonadism in patients with sickle cell disease (SCD). A cross-sectional study was done to determine whether hypogonadism in male patients with SCD is due to primary testicular failure or secondary pituitary/hypothalamic dysfunction and assess the association between hypogonadism and serum ferritin levels. Hormonal assessment for serum concentrations of testosterone, follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) was done for 34 men with SCD and their charts were reviewed for relevant clinical variables.

Pharmacologic induction of fetal hemoglobin (HbF) expression is an effective treatment strategy for sickle cell disease (SCD) and β-thalassemia. Pomalidomide is a potent structural analog of thalidomide and member of a new class of immunomodulatory drugs. Recent reports demonstrated that pomalidomide reduced or eliminated transfusion requirements in certain hematologic malignancies and induced HbF ex vivo in CD34(+) progenitor cells from healthy and SCD donors.

Background: We compared daily pain, home analgesic use, and utilization among ambulatory adults in the randomized multicenter study of hydroxyurea in sickle cell anemia (MSH). We related the fetal hemoglobin (HbF) hydroxyurea response to these response variables.

Methods: Patients rated their sickle cell pain intensity (0-9), use of analgesics, and visits for pain daily.
