Left ventricular thrombus (LVT) is mostly associated with anterior wall myocardial infarction and reduced ejection fraction. It can also be associated with cardiomyopathy, myocarditis, and hypercoagulable states such as cancer, antiphospholipid syndrome, and protein C or protein S deficiency. Factor V Leiden (FVL) disease is one of the hypercoagulable states where mutant factor V is insensitive to natural anticoagulation factor protein C, and FVL disease increases the risk of peripheral thromboembolism such as pulmonary embolism (PE) and deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

Background: Depression and anxiety occur more frequently in women and are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

Objectives: Data on the association between these psychiatric conditions and the incidence of acute heart failure (HF) and how they influence heart failure outcomes in women are lacking. We investigated this potential relationship using data from the National Inpatient Sample.

Objectives: To describe the different aetiologies of ascites and test the validity of serum ascites albumin gradient (SAAG) and cytology in a contemporary unselected medical cohort.

Methods: All adult patients admitted to Nottingham University Hospitals, UK, between 1 May 2013 and 30 April 2018 with new-onset radiologically-confirmed ascites were included. Data were analysed to determine the distribution of different aetiologies of ascites and the diagnostic accuracy of SAAG in portal hypertension and cytology in malignancy as underlying causes of ascites.

Characteristics and performance of a time of flight (TOF) spectrometer developed for performing fission mass distribution studies are presented. The spectrometer contains two TOF arms based on multi-wire proportional counters (MWPCs). Each arm has two MWPCs to form a start-stop detection system for TOF measurements.
