Sevelamer carbonate experience in Indian end stage renal disease patients.

This open label, multicentric, comparative clinical trial was done to compare the efficacy and tolerability of two sevelamer formulations, sevelamer carbonate, and sevelamer hydrochloride, in the treatment of hyperphosphatemia in Indian end stage renal disease (ESRD) patients. A total of 97 ESRD patients on hemodialysis, were enrolled. Patients were randomized to receive either sevelamer carbonate or sevelamer hydrochloride.

Varied effects of dietary sucrose and cholesterol on serum lipids, lipoproteins and apolipoproteins in rhesus monkeys.

Serum lipid, lipoproteins, apolipoproteins and plasma insulin and glucose were studied in rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) fed high sucrose diets (69%, w/w), with and without added cholesterol. When compared to basal diet, a high sucrose diet with no added cholesterol fed for 6 weeks increased serum total cholesterol and triglycerides by factors of 1.2 and 2.

A simplified colorimetric micromethod for determination of serum cholesterol.

A simple and rapid micromethod is described for quantitation of cholesterol in 5-10 microliter of serum using uranyl acetate to deproteinize the serum and o-phthalaldehyde reagent to develop color. Independent analyses of serum samples by the present method and by two reference methods, Abell-Kendall and automated colorimetric method, indicated accuracy of the micromethod (r = 0.99).

Free and protein-bound serum sugars and serum lipids were analyzed in 65 adult diabetic patients, 10 age-matched controls, and 24 male medical students for correlation of carbohydrate changes with the extent of retinal, renal, and cardiovascular disease. In diabetic sera, both protein-bound sugars and free mannose, fucose, and hexosamine were significantly elevated; free galactose and inositol were elevated in some diabetic patients, and essentially undetectable in sera from controls. Serum triglycerides and pre-beta-lipoproteins were also elevated in diabetics, but alpha-lipoproteins decreased.
