Superparamagnetic nanoparticles as potential systems for the treatment of Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

This study aims to use superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs), specifically magnetite (FeO), to deliver deflazacort (DFZ) and ibuprofen (IBU) to Duchenne muscular dystrophy-affected (DMD) mouse muscles using an external magnetic field. The SPIONs are synthesized by the co-precipitation method, and their surfaces are functionalized with L-cysteine to anchor the drugs, considering that the cysteine on the surface of the SPIONs in the solid state dimerizes to form the cystine molecule, creating the FeO-(Cys)-DFZ and FeO-(Cys)-IBU systems for tests. The FeO nanoparticles (NPs) were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and magnetic measurements.

Thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) for an acute type A aortic dissection following transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR).

An 86-year-old male with multiple medical comorbidities was referred for an elective transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) for severe symptomatic aortic stenosis with an ejection fraction of 35%. A self-expanding valve was deployed successfully, but intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) confirmed an acute type A aortic dissection (ATAAD), necessitating immediate intervention. Multiple intraoperative imaging modalities were utilized for deployment of a conformable GORE TAG (cTAG) stent graft for thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR).

Biodesign: Engineering an aortic endograft explantation tool.

Endovascular aortic repair (EVAR) graft failure can be as high as 16% to 30% owing to endoleak, graft migration, or infection, often necessitating explantation, leading to potential morbidity (31%) and mortality (6.3%). Graft prongs frequently tear through the endothelium during explantation, leading to endothelial damage and subsequent fatal bleeding.
