Purpose: Since hand and facial tissue transplantation are new treatments, risk data must be derived from early reports of the few cases done to date combined with extrapolations from other procedures with similar risks. This manuscript summarizes data from both sources including eight separate studies that measure the real and perceived risks associated with hand and facial tissue transplantation.
Methods: Real Risks: Several large clinical studies describing risk data from kidney transplant recipients (10-years experience) and risk data from 49 human hand transplants in 33 recipients (>10 years experience) were reviewed.
Aims And Objectives: We studied 45 patients with chondrosarcoma, without metastasis at diagnosis, who were surgically treated between January 2000 and December 2004 to evaluate the risk factors associated with local recurrence and metastasis.
Materials And Methods: Fourteen (31%) patients had had some major prior intervention, either in the form of an open biopsy or a curettage / unplanned excision, before presenting to us. Eight patients had pathologic fractures at presentation.
We describe a modification of the classical Essex-Lopresti manoeuvre for the indirect reduction and stabilisation of displaced intra-articular fractures of the calcaneus. The radiological and functional results achieved using this technique in 15 patients is presented. Ten tongue-shaped and 8 joint depression type fractures were treated by the new method, incorporating the use of an additional traction pin.
