Hybrid scaffolds from natural and synthetic polymers have been widely used due to the complementary nature of their physical and biological properties. The aim of the present study, therefore, has been to analyzea bilayer scaffold of poly(lactide-co-glycolide)/fibrin electrospun membrane and fibrin hydrogel layer on a rat skin model. Fibroblasts were cultivated in the fibrin hydrogel layer and keratinocytes on the electrospun membrane to generate a skin substitute.

Short-term effects of therapeutic hypothermia following hypoxia-ischemia in neonatal male and female rats.

Nowadays, the only treatment for human babies suffering from hypoxia-ischemia (HI) is therapeutic hypothermia (TH). However, a better understanding of the specific effects of TH in males and females is important to improve its clinical application. The present study evaluated the short-term effects of TH on the brain injury and behavioral outcomes in male and female neonatal rats submitted to neonatal HI.

Salivary gland cancer in Southern Brazil: a prognostic study of 107 cases.

Background: Salivary gland cancers (SGC) represent an uncommon group of heterogeneous tumors. We performed a retrospective survey of SGC diagnosed in a reference center for treatment of malignant tumors from the south of Brazil aiming to determine the prognostic value of demographic, clinic and pathologic features.

Objectives: To evaluate the diagnostic yield of the cell block (CB) technique with immunohistochemistry in patients with mesenchymal neoplasms of the gastrointestinal tract collected by endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (EUS-FNA).

Methods: Tissue samples from consecutive patients with subepithelial lesions collected by EUS-FNA, without analysis by on-site cytopathology, were evaluated by the same pathologist only using CBs in AAF fixative. Sections were stained with haematoxylin-eosin and underwent complementary immunohistochemical staining for SMA, CD117, DOG-1 and S100 in the presence of mesenchymal neoplasms.
