Background: Infections are an important cause of morbidity and mortality in patients in intensive care units (ICUs). Fungal infections have increased substantially over recent years and fungi have become one of the important pathogens in ICU patients. This study tests the hypothesis that the incidence of fungal infections is lower in critically ill patients under mechanical ventilation receiving enteral rather than total parenteral nutrition.

A group of 33 cases of bacteriemia with CNS-sensitive only to glycopeptides was compared with a group of 187 cases with CNS sensitive to methicillin.
