Silicone oil implantation in penetrating injuries complicated by PVR. Results from 1982 to 1986.

Between 1982 and 1986, the authors implanted silicone oil in 34 eyes with retinal detachment and proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) stages C-3 to D-3 caused by penetrating injuries. The retina had failed to reattach after initial vitrectomy, membrane peeling, and scleral buckling. Complete anatomic reattachment was achieved in 62%, partial reattachment in an additional 9%.

Influence of indomethacin on PGE2 in rabbit aqueous humor after YAG laser photodisruption of the iris.

In an experimental study with rabbits, the influence of indomethacin on the postoperative PGE2 level in the aqueous humor was investigated, following YAG laser traumatization of the iris. Indomethacin is a drug with an inhibitory effect on the synthesis of prostaglandins. Using albino rabbits, the right eye was treated with indomethacin eye drops three times daily for 3 days.

High-energy electrons used to inhibit experimental intraocular proliferation and detachment.

Irradiation of rabbit eyes with high-energy electrons was used to test the inhibition of experimental intraocular proliferation and retinal detachment, produced by intravitreal implantation of 250,000 homologous fibroblasts. After irradiation with 2,000 rad, started 5 days after implantation, 45% of eyes (9 of 20) still manifested traction detachment. When the dose was increased to 3,000 rad and radiation treatment was started 1 day after implantation, proliferation and traction detachment were observed in only 10% of eyes (2 of 20).

Trabeculectomy and intraocular lens implantation: a combined procedure.

We present the results achieved in 26 cases of trabeculectomy combined with intraocular lens implantation after extracapsular surgery in eyes with open-angle glaucoma. Phacoemulsification was performed in nine cases, planned extracapsular cataract extraction in 17. In 23 eyes, a posterior chamber lens was implanted; in three eyes an anterior chamber lens was used because of a ruptured posterior capsule.
