Mental health symptoms in a cohort of hospital healthcare workers following the first peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in the UK.

Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is likely to lead to a significant increase in mental health disorders among healthcare workers (HCW).

Aims: We evaluated the rates of anxiety, depressive and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms in a population of HCW in the UK.

Method: An electronic survey was conducted between the 5 June 2020 and 31 July 2020 of all hospital HCW in the West Midlands, UK using clinically validated questionnaires: the 4-item Patient Health Questionnaire(PHQ-4) and the Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R).

Intracameral vancomycin following cataract surgery: An eleven-year study.

Aim: To compare the incidences of endophthalmitis after cataract operations before and after introduction of intracameral vancomycin at the end of surgery.

Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed of presumed infectious endophthalmitis after cataract surgery from January 1, 1998 to December 31, 2008. From January 2001, the practice of using intracameral vancomycin at the end of cataract surgery was introduced.

Bilateral severe fibrinous anterior uveitis--an unusual complication of pamidronate therapy exacerbated by topical latanoprost.

Aim: The aim of this study was to report a case of severe bilateral fibrinous anterior uveitis following pamidronate therapy in a patient on latanoprost.

Methods: This study is presented as an interventional case report.

Results: Clinical examination showed bilateral severe fibrinous uveitis following an intravenous infusion of disodium pamidronate.

Traumatic expulsive aniridia after phacoemulsification.

Blunt trauma is usually associated with severe ocular damage particularly in eyes following cataract surgery. Small, self-sealing incision cataract surgery is changing the pattern of presentation of such cases, with relatively favorable outcomes. We describe a case of blunt trauma following phacoemulsification leading to aniridia.

Purtscher's retinopathy after fracture dislocation of shoulder joint.

Purtscher described sudden blindness in patients with severe head trauma due to a remote retinopathy, characterised by bilateral retinal haemorrhages, cotton wool spots, and optic disc swelling seen on fundoscopy. A similar retinopathy has been reported in compressive chest trauma, long bone fractures, and acute pancreatitis. It is less well recognised that Purtscher's retinopathy can occur unilaterally and following less severe trauma.
