Preeclampsia is a major hypertensive pregnancy disorder with a 50% heritability. The first identified gene involved in the disease is STOX1, a transcription factor, whose variant Y153H predisposes to the disease. Two rare mutations were also identified in Colombian women affected by the hemolysis, elevated liver enzyme, low platelet syndrome, a complication of preeclampsia (T188N and R364X).

Phototoxicity is a significant constraint for live cell fluorescence microscopy. Excessive excitation light intensities change the homeostasis of the observed cells. Erroneous and misleading conclusions may be the problematic consequence of observing such light-induced pathophysiology.

Congenital long QT syndrome (LQTS) is a cardiac channelopathy characterized by a prolongation of the QT interval and T-wave abnormalities, caused, in most cases, by mutations in KCNQ1, KCNH2, and SCN5A. Although the predominant pattern of LQTS inheritance is autosomal dominant, compound heterozygous mutations in genes encoding potassium channels have been reported, often with early disease onset and more severe phenotypes. Since the molecular mechanisms underlying severe phenotypes in carriers of compound heterozygous mutations are unknown, it is possible that these compound mutations lead to synergistic or additive alterations to channel structure and function.

Microbeam radiation therapy, an alternative radiosurgical treatment under preclinical investigation, aims to safely treat muzzle tumors in pet animals. This will require data on the largely unknown radiation toxicity of microbeam arrays for bones and teeth. To this end, the muzzle of six young adult New Zealand rabbits was irradiated by a lateral array of microplanar beamlets with peak entrance doses of 200, 330 or 500 Gy.
